I am 25 years old was diagnosed with uc in nov.2007 i have a question about lower gi hemmorage.  My main symptom when I am flaring is basically mucus and blood. When I flare they seem to last for 3 months.  My first medicine prescribed to me was colozal which worked for a while then stopped working, then i was put on 4x Lialda a way which had me in my longest remission, but now i am flaring again and it seems like it is going to last longer then 3 months.  I feel this is my most severe flare up yet , I lost 20 pounds and i am pale.  I am curious because i read alot about hemmorage and i dont think i have but the bleeding has slowed to like these mucusy ***** bloody like half dollar sized peices of who knows what.  Has anyone ever hemmoraged before and can tell me how u know u do just blood just  pour out of u because thats not happening this flare isnt much different from my others except for the weight loss but i used to smoke marijuana to keep my weight on when i flared, but since i stopped doing that i have lost 20 lbs.

When I had mega toxic pan colitis I lost many pints of blood the first day in the hospital but it wasn't actually called a hemmorage. What you described sounds pretty much like a normal flare. Anytime you have a flare you should check in with your GI. He/she may want to tweak your meds. It sounds like you might need some blood tests to check for anemia, or mineral and vitamin imbalances. Are you eating a low residue diet? Ensure plus protein shakes (lactose and gluten free) are great when you are having trouble keeping weight on. My son and I like the milk chocolate and vanilla the best. The strawberry is too sweet and the dark chocolate has a griity texture. Boost also makes a great orange or peach protein drink. Our local grocery store carries these in the pharmacy section. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi...you should call the doc and get in asap....you should also be on rectal meds.

I bled a lot the first few years flaring...it took a while with oral/rectal 5-ASA meds to get it under control.

Get your blood levels checked as well as your vitamin D and Vitamin B12.

Are you male or female?

Call the doc and for sure get on rectal meds. The doc might suggest prednisone....but please don't until you try dealing with it from both ends.
