Anyone out there been on high doses of prednisone (I am currently on 75mg oral per day), and not experienced any noticeable side effects?  I have been on high dose steroids for at least 6 weeks - the IV steroids made me blow up like a balloon, but the oral pred seems to have little impact on my system.  I am only just beginning to notice some therapeutic benefit at this dose, but still no side effects. Curious what other's experience with this drug is.....

Prednisone damages the connective tissue in the body. So even if you don't experiencing any side effects that doesn't mean the prednisone isn't damaging your body.

I was on 40mgs, average 25mgs, over three months. My teeth are more sensitive than they used to be, and my eye doctor noted that the pressure in my eyes is close to borderline (19).

I have never been on more than 50mg, and I was only on that for three days, but I have very little side-effects from pred. I know that it can cause damage to other tissues and other systems but I eat very healthy, exercise (with weights to build bone mass) , take vitamins and make sure that I get exttra calcium...my eye pressure and blood pressure have never been affected either...however, I have not been on pred long term. I have been on it twice, once for three months and I am now tapering it again...I should be completely off of it in another week or two...which will mean a total of seven or eight weeks this time around...for me truly nothing else works sometimes and it is a question of the lesser of two evils - keep flaring and bleeding and dealing with the health issues related to that or take pred and stop the flare and get in remission...for me the choice is pretty simple...

This is my second time on pred first time started at 60mg this time started at 40mg i seem to get every side effect going i was only off it for 3months when started flaring badly again should be off it in another 4 weeks hope you dont get any side effects good luck

When I had my first (and horrid) run-in with UC in 2005, I was put on Prednisolone (which I think is the same as prednisone). I cannot remember my precise dose but I want to say it was 60mg or more. I had TERRIBLE mental/psychological side-effects, including crazy anxiety and chilling suicidal behavior (never had that before or since). Scared the hell out of my wife.

However, I know that only affects certain people so if you are not having such effects, you hopefully won't. I know that they do not like to leave people on 'roids for long anyway.

Was on 40 mg for 10 days and tapered down. I have two more days of 5 mg. It had no positive effects on me at all. about two weeks it gave me some nice acne. That's about it.

Yes. If I had to go back to the time when I had my second flare, didn't know yet that I had colitis, and didn't know yet how to get into remission using natural methods, I would have made the same decision to take prednisone. In fact, I was in such a desperate state at the time that I took the medicine without even looking at the side effects. Imagine my dismay when I read them.

Side effects such as the moon face, acne, leg spasms, mood changes may seem horrible. But they are temporary. They will go away after we cease the medicine. However, we can never gain back the fact that prednisone ages the connective tissue. We might be very healthy so we don't notice the aging process, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Connective tissue isn't just noticeable on the surface. It runs deep in the body. In fact, it is throughout our body. Prednisone ages the connective tissue. We can't always see how.

I have been on and off Prednisone for years and I felt the affects of it while I was on it. It has terrible side effects like my eyes were sensitive, I gained a lot of water weight, I could not sleep, I was hyper, my heart raced, I spoke too fast, etc. The permanent damage occurred in my right eye: I have poor vision now. I will never take it again because Prednisone suppresses the immune system and I have gotten very sick on it. It's just a shame because it is a good temporary fix for UC.

     Doctor never starts me higher than 40 mgm and that makes me nuts!  The only time I was on 60 mgm was in the hospital on IV steroids..ugh..what a horror.  They had to give me insulin because it shot my glucose levels up to 180  not to mention my blood pressure which went up to 210/110 and I needed three different blood pressure meds to control it.  Unfortunately, I am more or less prednisone dependant.  Been off the stuff for two months and flaring again.  Going to ask the doc to put me on Lialda, worth a shot.
