Do any of you drink Ensure while flaring? Right now I have to take the pressure off my rectum.

Everyone is different how they respond to Ensure but I found that I couldn't use them because they made me worse. They have a lot of sugars in them. Boost I seem to do better on. I also used Carnation Instant Breakfast with Lactaid milk on occasion with no issues.

You could/should consider Modulin IBD by Nestle....

My Naturopath said that boost/ensure are not good for people with IBD....contrary to what some people think, your diet does have a large part in your likelihood to get out of a flare or stay in remission. It amazes me that people say they eat whatever they want whenever they want. If you are in remission, sure you can eat what you want , but you are just filling your colon with bad bacteria and eventually the crap is gonna hit the fan...so to speak...

During my last really bad flare a couple years ago my husband bought me ensure because I wasn't eating. Well after a couple cans the diarhea was so bad that I got so dehydrated and had to be rushed to the emergency. I spent the evening being hooked up to machines, I couldn't talk because all the saliva dried up it was awful. I will never drink one of those again especially if I'm flaring.

i have to basically live on ensure right now.
the strawberry and chocolate individual cans.
its the only thing i can eat and i need as much nutrients as possible for the bubby in my belly!
i sometimes have sustagen as well mixed with water, but the ensures are a complete meal.
and they give my colon a bit of a rest as well.
ive never tried boost. my dr and dietician recommended ensure, so ive only been on that.

Alan, that is the automatic word censor because words like that I guess are not deemed appropriate. The rule is, if you don't want your child to see or say the word then it shouldn't be on this forum.

I use HMR or protein shakes cause they taste better, they taste alot better when I add ice cream fresh from the dairy.

When you're considering liquid nourishments, remember to read the label and the ingredients. Many of them contain a surprising amount of fiber, which may not be good for a flaring colon. They're made this way because they're often used for malnourished, debilitated people who tend toward constipation. Some contain large amounts of HFCS, which some people feel bothers them.
On the principle of "if it bothers you don't eat it", always read labels. Because we know each of us is different and we have to tailor our diets and treatment to suit our bodies.

Neither. Try Absorb Plus that specially formulated for IBDers. Or check into protein powder or meal replacement shake mixes in the bodybuilding section of your local drug store. Either of these are healthier choices than Ensure or Boost, which are full of sugar and unhealthy fat.
