Psillium seed husk powder??

Okay this is probably a stupid question... but what is this psillium seed husk powder?  what is it and what is it supposed to do for us UCer's.  Since starting to sign back onto this site I've seen this pop up quite a few times in posts and figure I should ask.  so....  What is it? How do you take it? whats it supposed to do for us?  and how much is it?

Basically, it's metamucil powder...



Hmmm, what do they do for UCers....that's subjective, but in general...it bulks/softens/fluffs the stool for easier passage. It helps to lessen diarrhea, using the absorbative qualities of the psyllium. It exercises the colon, actually helping to lessen the spasming.



It's also what is now termed prebiotics....if one takes probiotics, it will help feed them creating a better populated flora of positive/good bacteria.



It will also aid in sweeping out bugaboos from the digestive tract, excessive mucus and basically help in the functioning of the colon.



There is seed/husk, seed or husk derived powders. I take the Metamucil capsules.

LFTC: I may take you up on your challenge. I have actually been reading about psyllium seed powder for months now but have not started it, mostly out of concern about it's effectiveness during a flare. I do, however, find the butyrate and prebiotic arguments very interesting and feel it's worth a go.

I have some psyllium seeds on hand from before (bought them wholesale in a sealed bag a while back) and am having a bit of trouble grinding them up fine enough, but am going to give it a go: twice a day in water.

As is often the case with us UC'ers, a complicating factor is that I recently started a hydrocortisone enema, so if do improve it may be hard to tell exactly what is helping. Nonetheless, since I would not want the steroid to be a long-term thing, I may be able to figure it out anyway.

In any event, if I can discern any particular reaction from psyllium seed powder, I will post it on this forum for the good of the order and advancement of our street-level science.

I've ordered a ton of this stuff online ($42cdn) worth incl shipping to Canada. That gets me 4 half-pound bags. You are officially on notice LFTC as you said it's the miracle we've all been waiting for... nono

Psyllium husk is the outer coating of the psyllium seed (i.e. it's part of the seed).

So...often when you buy 'psyllium seed' it is psyllium husk + psyllium inner seed.

However, the psyllium seed that LFTC is using seems to be only the inner seed without the husk -- according to the manufacturer's website.

Psyllium husk powder helps bulk up BM's (and is the ingredient in Metamucil), and the seed (without husk) has healing properties for the mucosal lining.

I'm doing pretty good now... but I'll definately keep this in mind to try if my current regime fails me. I need to find a local source to purchase this from though. I can't stand buyin anything over the computer.

I've been doing Psyllium Seed Powder since November 3 (14 days now), as noted in my signature below I take 1 teaspoon twice a day. I continue to have 10 or so throne opportunities a day. Things are slowly getting better with slightly less urgency and some stools with little mucus although I have others that are just mucus and blood.

My past experience with prednisone is that it would stop the bleeding and mucus within a couple of days. That didn't happen this time so I'm guessing that things inside were significantly worse this time when compared to past flares. It's not clear to me that the cortenemas are having any effect at all.

I plan to just be patient and keep on my current path. I added Turmeric on November 11th and I still have slippery elm around that I have yet to throw into the mix.

Has anyone found any clinical data on Psyllium Seed Powder? I have been unsuccessful in my searches.

I would also recommend trying the seed powder. Its cheap and I think its helping me after just a couple days. No reason not to try it, right?

Here is a link to some research. The scientific name for psyllium is plantago ovata. That may be why you have not found any research.

UCPop - as I have said on other threads psyllium seed powder in apple sauce with VSL#3 and cinnamon is the best method of eating this stuff for my daughter and we have had good success with it.
