I haven't been on the forum in a while. My question for all of my fellow UC sufferers is this. Do any of you have very narrow (stool) during your bowel movements from time to time? I have them sometimes and then sometimes I don't. Just wondering.

My stool seems to change pretty frequently based on what I eat. I don't worry about
it, honestly, because I view it as normal bowel function.

Yeah, I sometimes get narrow or 'pencil' stools. I've been told it's do do with the inside wall of the colon being constricted by varying degrees of ulceration. It seems to be a common sympton of UC .
For a few years before I was diagnosed, my stools would be invariably flat and ribbon-like, which is another indication of swelling inside the colon or rectum.

That is totally normal/typical. I have every size possible, especially during a flare.

Once in a while I have them, and it seems to have more to do with diet than with flaring for me.

Could be mild rectal inflammation, IBS, hemmies, stress, .....
I would suggest you take fibre supplements at least to bulk the stool a bit and keep it "fluffier".
You could be heading into a flare...if it starts to get more consistent, then that could be the heads up to start your rectal meds.
I hope rectal meds are part of your regimen....

That definitely happens when I am flaring or about
to flare. When there is inflammation and the colon is narrow it's bound to cause a change. any other symptoms?

I had to stop the fibre supplement. If your inflammed or ulcerated on up the pipe like I am then the fibre supplements cause a lot of discomfort when that bulkier stool is trying to be forced through a swollen colon. I usually benefit from psyllium husk; it helps my diarrhea tremendously. I took 1/4 teaspoon yesterday with one small meal and I almost passed out from the pain it caused coming out today. After which I started to get a fever--I believe something tore in there; it scared me. Anyway, be careful with fibre because it will hurt if you're severly inflammed or ulcerated.
