Apriso--how much do i take?

I have been taking 7 Asacol with no problems, and my GI gave me a prescription for Apriso just because it's fewer pills to take. He said i could take 2 or 3 Apriso once a day instead of 7 Asacol in divided doses. I'm confused as to the equivalence of Apriso-Asacol dosages. Do I take 2 Apriso or 3? Or just fool around and see what works? Thanks!

Good question....the dosage is very different because of the delivery system.

Each capsule contains 375mg mesalamine and the optimum dosage is 1500mg mesalamine with Apriso.
With Asacol, optimum dosage is 4800mg (12 pills) and you're in the middle of the road regarding Asacol, so maybe above middle of the road of 3 to start since you're tapering Pred?
You could increase if needed for sure as well considering you have pancolitis.

There are others who use it. I like how it's a lower dosage of mesalamine...

I'm on the max doseage of 4 Apriso, but like quincy said, that's a lot lower than the max doseage of 12 Asacol in terms of grams of mesalamine. I plan on asking my GI about this when I see him next month. Is Apriso's delivery so much more effective that it's ok to take less? I guess I'd start at 3, and if things are ok for a while (once you're off pred as well), then maybe drop to 2 and see what happens.

I'm on 4 Apriso once a day also... And I agree with fruitgirl... I'd start at 3 and if it worked fine, I'd MAYBE taper down to 2... but not for a while at least.. I'd give it at LEAST a month before I'd ever taper down on something like that.. just to make sure you are doing ok...
