A short while back there was a thread on here that discussed people not being able to sleep on their left side, without causing an immediate reaction to get up and go to the bathroom.  The same applies to me.

Then maybe THAT'S why I can't hold the enemas in?  They tell you to lay on your left side to put it in, and then stay there awhile. 

 I know they must have their reasons, but why can't we turn on our right side to take the enema?  I think that may be my whole problem of not being able to hold the liquid in for even 1 minute.( I tried warming it, I tried everything suggested here on how to try to keep the liquid in, with no luck, yet I know this med is the best for healing me)

The reason they recommend the left side is because that allows the enema to go up farther in your colon, into the sigmoid. If you can tolerate lying on your stomach with your butt up in the air like a sleeping baby, that will serve the same purpose.

Otherwise, it would seem to me you have nothing to lose by trying the right side. The fluid may not go past your rectum, but it's worth a try.

When laying on my right side for an enema (which I normally do), I will raise my hips by placing a pillow underneath. You can then turn on your back after a few minutes, then your left side (keeping your hips raised throughout). This may help you retain the enema a while longer and provide decent distribution within your colon.

I agree to try whatever way will allow comfort.

Joylu....are you on oral 5ASA meds still?

I don't lay on my left side anymore because my UC is pretty much limited to the rectum (and I can't see the TV from my left side, heehee....but I'll lay there for a few minutes. When I poo the next morning, there is Salofalk throughout my stool....so it's obvious that it still gets to the sigmoid.

You can try to use an antispasmodic an hour before you go to bed, that might help as well.

I usually lay on my stomach afterwards. I guess I'll lay on my left-side from now on.

Quincy, yes I am on Asacol, 3- 3x a day.

I will try taking an antispasmodic 1 hour before. Thanks.

I could lay on either side or my back, but just had to lay still! Or roll over very slowly....
It was moving that shifted the loose stuff and made me need to go.

Butt clenching helps before you roll and waiting through the rumbles/urge.
