"Mutaflor" to be released in Canada next month.

Probiotic,
They will be shipping to the US from Toronto very shortly. It's just available in Canada right now I think but within a couple of weeks it'll ship to the US. I believe it will be shipped in a cold pack and it'll be two day shipping. They'll only ship mon-wed so that it gets to you before the weekend. Are you in remission? I don't know if it induces remission or just maintains it? Any ideas?
Levi, I haven't asked my cousin but I'll get him to figure it out and post when I find out.

No, not at all in remission, and I know that probiotics are really more remission-maintaners than creators... but if mutaflor is a big gun it might be helpful, in combination withe the VSL3 that I now take. I am also thinking I may go to Toronto to pick some up directly and bring it back in a small cooler- that is, if they have an actual as opposed to virtual store front?

Don't know if they ship out of their warehouse but if you are willing to drive up, I'm sure they'll arrange for you to get it. If not, let me know. As I mentioned earlier, my cousin works there and I'm sure he can get it for you and you can pick it up from him somehow?

The study I found shows it maintains remission as well as mesalamines. Don't see anything about it inducing remission.

I am still curious about only taking it for 12 months. That would not work for continuous maintenance.

called the company about the 12 month period. They said its standard wording and that health Canada will not let them put that it can be used forever. They said if your doc thinks you should use it continually, go ahead.

I also just spoke with a rep from there and he said that is very safe and very geared towards UC. He promised to send me more info this afternoon. IF your email is posted I will forward to you.

Great thanks. I've also signed up for their mutaflor "blog". So far, it's pretty basic information - ie. blueberries are good for you! But, you never know where you might learn something new. I know that health canada is very cautious about these things. there's a probiotic called threelac which some people I know in the US swear by for their kids' UC (they have, or "had" two with it) but it's banned in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It's Japanese and widely available elsewhere. We've been researching this and it's iffy, so I'm inclined not to try it with my daughter at the moment. But Mutaflor has been used and studied for many decades. I wouldn't have a problem putting her on it long term if it works.

I received the info. It sounds kinda promising actually. I have lots of VSL at home but I may try this as it works out to be a bit cheaper. you can actually use both at once.

If you check out that study you will notice on the right side of the page a study from 1997 finding the same thing. What are they waiting for?

I wonder if you could culture it at home like yogurt?

Why hasn't it been on the market in the US for the last 13 years? Why aren't doctors telling people to take it? Why hasn't a study been done in the US?

I suppose that you can't patent it and charge tons of money as prescription drug is the answer. I don't know anything about the universities in Germany and the UK were they did the studies but they appear to be valid studies. Why hasn't this therapy been used for years? Seems like it should become much less expensive than mesalimine drugs. If you search the CCFA website you get a buried PDF that seems to point to priobiotics working as well as mesalimines in a bunch of studies. Why isn't on their front page?

Seems like this would be a break through for a potentially inexpensive maintenance therapy.

I really want to, but it's hard to justify when my insurance is paying for the vast majority of my VSL. I'll just wait for you two to try it and see how it works. J/k.

I agree. That's getting up there with the nematoads and hookworm injection. My friend did tell me once he thought I'd eat my own poop if I thought it'd make me healthy.

Krissy, I think that's why they're going to have a hard time selling this here. I actually think the story behind it is quite incredible and I don't have any safety concerns.

Since it's been identified since 1917 and used for decades in Europe I'm pretty certain of it's safety. I've decided if it's just a little cheaper when the US sales begin I will buy some.

Killcolitis, do you know when it will be available for order from the states? The website just says available Canada now and in the US "very shortly."

Here is an excellent pdf from a German website. It's worth the time just for the picture on the first page alone! That picture is what I think about everytime I see the phrase "intestinal flora."

Krissy, This was on Wikipedia regarding the types of E. coli:

Most E. coli strains are harmless, but some, such as serotype O157:H7, can cause serious food poisoning in humans, and are occasionally responsible for product recalls. The harmless strains are part of the normal flora of the gut, and can benefit their hosts by producing vitamin K2, and by preventing the establishment of pathogenic bacteria within the intestine.

Page six of that pdf I posted up above also has info on the safety of the E. coli strain in Mutaflor.
