I have been experiencing excruciating cramping for the past few days. Is there anything I can do or take to help this? It always happens before and during a BM but sometimes nothing comes out and I will continue to have cramps for 10 or 20 minutes until it happens.

Normal for flaring, unfortunately....increase the Canasa or call the doc and request the enemas. It's rectal inflammation and needs to be treated more intently. After the inflammation subsides, those feelings will lessen.

The spasming can also be helped by an antispasmodic...it won't be quite as intense or long, but with you flaring, you'll still have them happening.

I use Bentylol (same as Bentyl) which is dicyclomine. Starting with 10mg 1 - 3 times a day is very, very helpful. It's one med I never want to be without.

I have to call this week and get more medications. I was hoping I would get significantly better without adding more drugs.

If you don't want to take more meds you can try using a heating pad when the cramps hit or even those stick on air activated charcoal heat pads.

I also use Bentyl and it has been a life saver. I was getting horrendous cramps too and the Bentyl knocks it down a notch or even prevents them from happening.

I have been getting those acute cramps that double you over this past few weeks.I haven't found anything thats helping at minute but i do remember heating pads have helped in the past. I hope you feel better soon!!

Justlivelife...no different than any of the meds you're taking. It helps prevent the cramping/spasming, etc. Effective for me, thankfully my doc hands out garbage....not!

I desperately need something for these cramps. I was just in tears... Everytime I go to the bathroom I get so cramped up and it feels like I am passing a baseball but then I look in the toilet and it's not even large. I don't understand.

I spoke to my doctor and she said she will have to give me other drugs. I don't have insurance so I can't afford much, name brand medication is so expensive and I can't order from Canada because it will take a few weeks and I need relief now. I don't want to rush into taking anything new but I also don't think I am improving at all. My doctor thinks I need to nip this in the bud before I get worse.

But they aren't all the same.....all have different qualities and are not considered interchangable even though they all can be in the category of antispasmodics.

I've never used librax or donnatal, I've only used bentylol (dicyclomine).

Absolutely each would not work the same for everyone, and each patient would have specific needs where one med would be better to suit them.

I find the Bentylol amazing, so I'll suggest it. But in doing some research of the others you mentioned, I'll have others to suggest as well.

I'm not getting the garbage comment, however....you've clearly misunderstood my reply and the fact that I do use Bentylol.

She thinks prednisone is my best option. I think she wants to fix the flare, not just treat the horrible cramping. I can understand both sides but I have really been in pain with these cramps. I don't remember them being this bad last time I was flaring. I don't know what I will do. I think I am going to increase my Asacol to 12 for a few days and see if it helps. My dr said she would like to get me rectal enemas but she also said that without insurance the cost is extremely high. I don't want to work all week to pay for enemas.

the doc can certainly prescribe an antispasmodic.....it helps deal with the actual action and reason for the cramping/spasming. I don't get it. I've not heard of a doc say grin and bear the cramping....a flare, yes...be patient the meds will work and you're improving....but not the absolute discomfort.
Did you ask the doc for antispasmodics?

You should increase the canasa too ....but just make sure you get a new prescription for the increase in the asacol or you'll run out of meds and the pharmacy might not renew it sooner. Just in case.
