Left sided pain advice please.

I am after a little advice. I have left sided ulcerative colitis ... Untreated for 15 years due to no medication agreeing with me.

I just wanted to know why i keep getting really uncomfortable on my left side, it's like a really bad pressure or sometimes a really bad ache. It feels like it goes up under my rib aswell.

Does anybody else experience this?

I also been having a tendency to be constipated for 5 days then ill go from formed to loose stools the next time i go to the loo, why is this?

Today i have had a really bad ache in my left side, which was not relieved at all until i went to the loo and passed some formed and some loose stool.

I am just so tired of having this disease, it seems to control every aspect of my life. My family and i have an opportunity to immigrate to Vancouver from the UK but i am worried about getting healthcare out there.

Any advice would be much appreciated. xx

My suggestion is to use oral and rectal meds.

ARe you bleeding at all?

It could also be IBS....could be what you're eating or if you're not taking in enough food/

Regarding the constipated for 5 days...you mean no bms at all or hard to get out bms?

How many times are you having bms now?

I am Canadian and lived in the UK for 11 years and have been treated in both countries for this disease.  In Canada there is universal health care coverage (like NHS) and you will be covered as long as you immigrate properly.  It is not an insurance system like in US.  UC should not be a reason not to immigrate.

I live back in Canada now and the quality of care has been good - the same as in UK in my experience.

You should start to treat it - the pain is most likely serious inflamation and everytime stool passes through it will hurt like H*@@!

Sometimes I get the same thing on the left side, but in my case it is gas. When I get pain on the left side, it always happens after I have eaten something that I shouldn't, like cake and custard, etc. Sometimes probiotics can cause gas as well, which is a sign that it's working because when bacteria dies, it's creates gas in your intestines, which is why we sometimes feel bloated or feel pain.

I too have had the left sided pain. Sometimes its so bad that it wakes me up at night. When I was first diagnosed with UC I went to the emergency room because of the left sided pain along with
blood in my stool. They did a CT scan and it came back that the left side of my colon was a lot
larger than the rest of it. So now when I get that feeling I just assume that my colon is pretty
inflamed again. It sucks I know!!

I have been managing with a j-pouch since 1988. But like you - once in a while things get backed up from narrowing due to inflamation in a specific but recurring spot. The formed and then loose stools might be happening from the back up where food is 'fermenting' while sitting there, creating gas and the loose 'toxic' stool - creating pressure to push it all through - which is painful and further irritating. A vicious cycle.

I find that if I back of of solids at the first sign of this process, and push the fluids - it seems to resolve itself faster and with less inflamation/pain. Then I build slowly to a 'normal' diet including pro-biotics as every time the loose stools go through - it can clean these healthy guys out...

I am also Canadian and have been through the J pouch thing (1988). Currently dealing with liver disease which is somehow connected to all this in rare cases. Being assessed for transplant. The J-pouch has worked for me and I am sure they have learned lots since 1988. Good luck and stick with it! It is quite the process!
