OT - have a major stuffy nose....any quick remedies?

Every year I get a cold or some other case of the sickies right before my birthday (my bday is Jan 16th) so I was tickled that this year I wasn't sick for a change...well guess what? It's AFTER my bday but I got sick! mad  I have a pretty good head cold going and right now my nose is so stuffed that it feels like my head is gonna explode!  I can't take Dayquil because it gives me hives and other cold meds do nothing but "lock" in the stuffiness.  My nose clears when I stand up but I can't stay standing all day!  Any other quick home remedies I can try?  Btw, when I get a cold I use the nose spray for a couple of days only at night so I can get a good nights rest and I be sure to never ever use them for more then 3 days.  It's the day time that I need help with....smhair

Saline wash. Mix a teaspoon of non-iodized salt in warm water and rinse your nostrils out with a Neti pot of bulb syringe.

Oxymetazoline nasal spray.

As a last resort, what my mother used to do when we were little and there were virtually no OTC medications - Vicks Vapo-rub on the upper lip. Do not put it inside the nostrils, though.

This may sound weird but Vapo-rub burns my eyes which in turn activates my Dry Eye LOL. I have a bottle of Saline nose spray but it only works for a few minutes then I clog up again. I just want to breath :(

I second the neti pot. (or nasal syringe-I have one and find it easier than the pot)

I have had terrible sinus issues, and antibiotics are to be avoided at all costs for me, so I started using the syringe. It clears things out right away, and I haven't had a sinus infection in a very long time.

I also use grapefruit seed extract nasal spray. It stings a bit when you use it, but it helps a TON. I get mine at whole foods-it is Nutribiotic brand.

Also, maybe a humidifier? I find it helps me at night.

A gallon of homemade chicken noodle soup! (LOL.) It's not as fast-acting as Chinese hot & sour soup, which really can clear the head quickly, but it's safer for the colon. Hot liquids help decongest the nasal passages. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Happy belated Sherry! sucks you just got sick, however.




Get some Sudafed PE. DON'T get the 12 hour one..it'll have you jittery methinks.

Use it in conjunction with the other stuff suggested.

Okay this home remedy worked for me for years before UC. I haven't had a cold since being diagnosed ( wonder why? thats weird, oh well ). Not sure if this would be so great now with the UC issue but it always worked great for me before... so here goes.
Go and get yourself a jar of pickled peppercini's ( little peppers ), the hotter the better. And a 6 or 12 pack of beer. Sit down with jar of peppers and beer. Consume until you can't consume anymore or until one or both are finished. Go to bed.
When I would wake up in the morning the cold would be gone. Of course it wasn't a good nights sleep with the fire in the gut and the tossing and turning and having to pee. The Moron who told me about this said it worked because the peppers raised your bodies temperature to burn out the sickness and the beer was an easily sweated fluid. I kinda doubt this is what actually happens but I must say this home cure did work.
And I call the person a moron because they were. Not because the "cure" didn't work. LOL

Like I said though... might be a little risky to try this now with UC. Of course with remedies like that its no wonder I have gut problems. LOL

LOL I think I will pass on the beer and pepper remedy! I feel my gut rumbling just at the thought! :)

Thanks for the tips. I should go out and get the netti pot because I can also use that when my allergies act up.

Q, what is the difference between SudafedPE and the other one? A while ago, my primary wanted me to try using Sudafed for my allergies and it made my heart race so bad that I felt extremely faint. Very scary experience!

Hi...Sudafed always had pseudoephedrine in it. Now, they offer the PE which doesn't have it. I checked out the site and WOW.....they offer LOTS of products.


I would suggest the Sudafed PE or the Sudafed PE non-drying which has a lower amount of the decongestant plus an expectorant if your stuffy nose also has "stuff" in it..lol.



I don't know which one you had before since they did have long-lasting, etc. Some also have antihistamine which could also have given you some of the weird side effects you had. I pretty much stick with single products and then take them together...but I have no problem with the PE and I find it helpful.



I also will take it at night and save the spray for night as well so that I can sleep.

Yes, the neti-pots are great with saline; my remedy is hot and sour soup or a spicy Thai seafood soup...yummy and unclogs the sinuses really well! Chicken soup is good too!
