small bowel resection

I was diagnosed with UP about 2 years ago during my first flare up did the rowasa and was much better till about  3 months ago now i have another flare up. While doing medical research for my son who just had a small bowel recection due to a ruptured appendix i keep seeing small bowel recection for ulcerative colitis/ proctitis (not sure what the difference is) I am scared cause this flare up is left untreated because I have been dealing with my son and being sick. What would cause someone to get a small bowel resection

Small bowel resection for a ruptured appendix?  Do you think it might have been a large bowel resection as the appendix is attached to the large bowel, not the small?  There is a fellow here who had a partial colectomy for UC, is that what you mean?  I have never heard of a partial resection due to UC although it is common with Crohn's disease or diverticulitis.
