I just spoke to my GI and he's putting me on this for my recent flare. I've actually not heard of it before now, has anyone been on it before? He said it's a steriod that stays in the digestive tract.

Also, he mentioned maybe putting me on 6-mp.

What are the side effects like for these drugs?

I was on it for an extended period. It helped a little. In my case, it definitely was absorbed systemically, and I developed really bad long-term side effects.

The potential side effects are the same as from Prednisone, except they are supposed to be less likely to occur and milder with Entocort. I say "supposed to be" because in my case they weren't.

I used it for a couple of years to handle minor flares, but it was ineffective for me for serious flares.

When I felt a flare coming on, I would start taking it, and it would knock the flare out. This summer I had a serious flare, and it didn't help at all. In fact 60 mg/d of Pred didn't help either.

Hmm, my flares tend to be what most people consider minor...usually around 5 bm/day with blood. And D. But it depends on each flare.

I got stuck waiting at CVS for over an hour for these little buggers, I sure hope they're worth it. They're also like 50 bucks with my co-pay. So yeah. Totally better be worth it.

they did nothing for me.....i have left sided colitis, and it wasn't reaching it....

Entocort is a miracle drug for me but I have never used it to deal with a real flare. It kills my D and cramping fast and the 4 times I taken it I had zero side effects. Docs won't give it to me longterm so after a few months I have to stop and everything goes back to zero again.

I have been on it since the beginning of January.  It has done nothing for me.  I am going to have to stop taking them because my insurance deductible which is $4500 starts in March.  Entocort will cost me $1700 for a thirty day supply.  I don't have the money up front to go to the pharmacy.  My asacol is $652 and the Rowasa is $500 for a month.  I need to cut back but don't really care because nothing is helping me.  Starting Humira any day and that is going to cost me a bundle. 

Does anybody know if I should taper off the Entocort or can I just stop?

You do need to taper, because it is variably absorbed systemically. Check with your Gi, but I think I dropped one pill every other day - the first week, 3 pills one day then 2 the next; second week 3 pills 2 days and 2 the others, third week, two pills a day, etc.
