Anyone take Elavil?

Hey all,

So I was talking to my therapist the other day. She was telling me about Elavil. She said the normal dose is like 400mg or something like that for depression. However, she said there have been a lot of people with IBD who take just a trace dose - 10mg and it seems to change their lives for some reason.

Sooo anyone on Elavil? If so how is it working out for you?

I thought my GI was the only one to prescribe it for an IBD! He put me on it right after my bowel rest in hopes that it would keep me in remission. Four years later, I'm still on it. He said its an old school antidepressant but it has been show to have other uses. My mom takes it for migraines, others take it as a sleep aid (doesn't do anything to help me sleep). I started out at 10mg but I think I was out of pills and couldn't get my script so I took one of my moms and hers was 25mg and I did better on that than the 10mg. My GI always insists that I stay on it. Obviously its my choice but it's $10 for 3 months, a really low dose so it doesn't interfere with my effexor, and I'm in remission and I don't wanna screw that up.
I'm not sure how it works while in an active flare because I started taking it at the end tail of my flare but I think its worth a try if you're willing.
It does cause dry mouth but I've never noticed it. I chew a lot of gum though.

It will be a year ago in April that I was put on it....It is also know as Amitriptyline (which is what I get).  I had such pain after I would eat I lost 20 pounds before being put on it.  Yes, it works.  I started at 10mg but found 25 mg works better, so I am on 25 mg and it only costs $2.35 for 3 months.  YAY
