On 6MP, elevated liver enzymes - will they go down?

I have been on 6mp for a bit over two months and been having weekly and then biweekly bloodwork. A couple times my liver enzymes came back very slightly elevated but this past week one of them was over 100 (I don't remember which enzyme, but i know the normal range is below 40). My dr had me reduce my 6mp dosage, cut out alcohol for the week and I've been drinking a ton of water. Anyway, I repeated the bloodwork today, one week later to see if the enzymes will return to normal - but i'm feeling really anxious about it. Anyone else been in this situation before and had their bloodwork come back normal after an abnormal reading? I was feeling so good that I finally found a medication that actually worked but obviously i can't sacrifice my liver to stay on it. I will probably find out tomorrow what the results are or by Monday. I'd love to hear about any other experiences with the drug. Thanks!

Yes, I've had one blood test come back elevated, actually almost toxic. But I went in 2 weeks later and my blood test came out normal.

     Weren't you informed to cut out alcohol when going on the 6MP?????  I never drank but only one or two at a social event, but that was the first thing my doctor told me when he started me on 6MP about eight years ago.  Yes, even without the alcohol, my liver enzymes were elevated.  My bilirubin was twice the normal limit.  When taken off the 6MP the level returned to normal.  When I was hospitalized in 08 my pancreatic enzyme levels were off the wall....four times the normal limits.  Must have scared the beJesus out of my GI because he immediately took me off the 6MP that time too, but when all levels returned to normal...right back on the 6MP again. 

     Getting very tired of this Merry GO Round and ready to meet with a surgeon.  Remicade stopped working after my 3rd infusion.  I am back on prednisone, which is doing nothing.  Going six times each morning, bleeding but not heavy and terrible rectal pressure.

I just recently went through this about a month ago. My liver enzymes went through the roof. I was taken off the Azathioprine. I was retested last week and my enzymes were almost back to normal. So no more Azathioprine I would guess. This really bums me out as it was working and not too expensive either.

no, you can't sacrifice your liver for sure. consider no alcohol except for very small amounts.

Thanks for your responses. No word yet from the dr. so hopefully Monday morning I'll find out what the story is. I've had difficulty with so many other medications that i really had high hopes for this. i should have remembered that if there is a side effect to have, I'll have it. My dr. had not mentioned limiting alcohol intake. I'm not a big drinker but i will have a drink every once in a while. If I get to stay on the 6 mp I will have to make sure that's OK.

I have the same problem. I just got rechecked but I am worried that if the results are not good, I will have to stop taking 6mp. My doctor said my liver is 100% fine according to the liver panels but the 6mmp test shows that my body isn't metabolizing 6mp as it should. shakehead I am starting to feel so defeated by this illness. I hope something works out.

I know this is kind of an old topic but were your results normal?

Notso - I can't metabolize 6mp properly either and I understand the feeling of defeat. I felt the same way. I still take 6mp and luckily it has kept me out of severe flares but I still flare nonetheless. I feel that I am coming down to the wire with Uc meds. I already told my GI that I won't go on Remicade, he sort of wrinkled his nose and asked me "Why not?". I've had it with this disease and if I have to go on yet ANOTHER potentially harmful medication to control my Uc, I would much rather just have my colon out.
