Uc and now diagnosed with cdiff

Hi..i was just wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with cdiff and have UC. I was hospitalized with diarrhea yesturday and just thought it was a uc flare again...sent a stool this am and yup...back positive with cdiff!!! just started on vancomycin orally. Has anyone had this???

wow, just what you dont need!! Were you recently on any antibiotics?

I read a few years back that c.diff can live in the colon long after symptoms have left. It's also easy for us to pick it up..hand to mouth.

Hope the vancomycin helps.

Hey quincy...was not on antibotics but i am on remicade and im an nurse in a hospital with alot of patients with cdiff. I have always used such good hygeine...who knows. Im hoping the vanco works too. thanks

Hi,

After being diagnosed over 22 years ago i did not have another flare until Jan this year. I became unwell very quickly and was hospitalized the second week of January, where i discovered i had C diff. Apparently it is quite common to get c diff with a bowel disorder as your natural flora is imbalanced.

I feel for you the c diff went quickly but i have been told i am a carrier so be careful of future antibiotics, take care

Lynn...have you been on probiotics before this hit? Maybe now is a good time to start if you're not.

I had been on a probiotic but maybe not a high enough dose. i am going to talk to the dr today about getting started again now. I am hanging in there. no real change yet but only had 3 oral doses of the antibotic. Thanks for thinking of me. I will keep you posted!!

I was diagnosed with UC in 2007.  In 2008 I had what I thought was a flare but turned out to be C.Diff.  I was really sick - hospitalized for 8 days (had to be in full isolation). 

They tell me that the C Diff can live in my digestive tract without causing symptoms but if I take antibiotics they might kill off the residual flora in my intestine and the C. Diff will come roaring back.  I am now very careful about taking antibiotics

Ugh I totally feel for you. I had CDiff for 6 months last year. I got it in July after taking anti-biotics in May. It was terrible because unless you take a culture in you really can't tell the difference between it and a flare. I was on Metronidazole on and off for 6 months. Every time I stopped taking it, the CDiff came back. Finally I added Florastor probiotic with the Metronidazole at the recommendation of my GI and it went away and hasn't come back since December (knock on wood).

Yup - I had c-diff and Camphylobacter in October. Awful, awful, awful!
I hadn't been on antibiotics and my GI had no explanation. I wasn't on probiotics at the time (just yogurt). Am taking VSL3 and more now and have no plans to ever stop.

I recommend trying fecal transplantation if you have C-diff.
