Cortenemas in place of prednisone?

I have heard alot that most people have to be on Prednisone as they wait for something like 6-MP to kick in.

Do you think if Cortenemas are working you could just use those while starting something like 6-MP??

How long can you use Cortenemas?

I have been on them months at a time, once almost a year. I wouldn't think that would be prudent for your daughter..... but I would think they might be OK for the, what, 2-3months while 6-MP kicked in? Better than pred, in terms of the long-term potential issues....

Is she doing better on the enemas? Did you end up cutting out the fiber? How is she?

Anyhoo, I agree with song lady. There are issues with the cort enemas thinning the tissues but I can't imagine it's as bad as being on the systemic prednisone.

Hi Jennifer- Yes, she is getting better. I did stop the psyllium seed powder also. Not really sure it made a diffeence either way.
I may introduce it again at some point. Bleeding is way better- she is still having some D but not as much as before.
Just trying to figure out where we will go from here...

Does she have pancolitis? That's really the prime issue. Cortenemas (a mainly topical agent) only work systemically when one stays on them over months, whereas Prednisone works quickly on the whole body. The trick is to have a definite exit strategy for tapering off it-- preferably before unpleasant side effects kick in. Have you looked up Dr. Marla Dubinsky on the Web? She's a pediatric gastro (Canadian, but practicing in Los Angeles, CA) subspecializing in IBD treatment who likely has posted on the steroid issue in child patients. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
