Hi Ellen, I just got over a case of external hemmeroids a couple of weeks ago. They were so painful but what I found helped was hot baths many times a day and they say to lay on your left side so the pressure is off your rectum. Fibre was important like Metamucil because all of a sudden because of the pain I was constipated I had constant pressure and urges but nothing came out. Drink tons of water. I also took this homeopathic stuff by Hylands for hemmeroids, it seemed to do something. I also took witch hazel many times a day on a cotton ball and applied it to the area and left it there. Vaseline, penetane cream or vitamin e applied to the rectum so things pass easier. Someone suggested that I wear support socks for vericose veins and boy did they ever help for the throbbing. I put them on as soon as I got up and wore them all day. The last thing I used was Anusol suppositories with cortisone in it.
This is the second time I had a problem with hemmeroids but they went away this time in about 2.5 weeks, last time it was months of agony because I thought it was the colitis and I used so many rectal meds that it irritated my rectum so bad that it cause my UC to flare it was a mess.
