I'm entering the last stretch of my prednisone prescript
ion. Starting tomorrow (Friday) I will be on 5mg for 5 days (last day of pred will be Tuesday)
I have not had alcohol in over a month in an attempt to minimize the symptoms of my flare. A friend of mine is having a party this weekend and I'm thinking of trying out alcohol again.
My flare has been getting better over the past two weeks so I'm prepared to see how it affects me. My only concern with drinking is the prednisone.
Do you think it's okay to try a little bit of alcohol at the 5mg dose? Let me stress again, A LITTLE BIT. I am not planning on getting drunk this weekend, just want to have 1-2 drinks and see how my UC reacts.

Congratulations that you are almost off prednisone!! I still have a ways to go, am at 15. I would suggest you have your alcohol with food. Just a suggestion.

I would wait, if you're still on pred, obviously you haven't been doing great THAT long. Just be really careful. You might be feeling better, but it's a fragile thing at the moment, I bet. If you do, prolly like a small glass of wine.

I would drink some vodka. Stay clear of the beer...

I would be curious too if alcohol would affect me since it seems like we are both trying to get over our flares. I'd stay off wine (I had horrible cramps with just 1/2 glass) and beer. I may try beckyinlondon's advice this weekend and try vodka. In tiny quantities to be safe! I'll let you know how my experience goes... Good luck! : )

I know I've had maybe 1-2 light beers / week in the past while on prednisone with no adverse reactions. Of course everyone is different. I haven't had alcohol since last year since I've been dealing with all my health issues of late...to be honest, I don't really miss it.

I had a glass of wine a few times when on pred with no problems. More than one or tow though might not be a good idea.

That's a hard call to make. I think you are probably in the best position to decide. Some considerations are:
Type and amount of alcohol.
Affect on liver.
Affect on condition of flare.
Affect on mood.

I JUST started tapering this week, and at the last birthday party I went to for our family (maybe 1.5 weeks ago?), my sister in law talked me into a small glass of wine. I was nervous about
it-but it was fine.
I wouldn't indulge too much, but try out a small amount and see how it goes. That is what I would do, anyway.
I agree about
drinking after eating, and be sure you don't take any tylenol or anything that day!

I stayed off alcohol for about
6 weeks after my first major flare. Then I gradually eased back into it mainly with wine. Bottled beer is pretty gassy so take it slow and steady, draft beer is kinder to your guts but again, don't overdo it or you'll be very sorry.
It all depends on your tolerance to alcohol as well. Most Americans have a fairly low tolerance say compared to Canadians, Aussies or British (which are in essence made up of the same blood stock).
Taken sensibly in moderation, it's not nearly as bad as it's sometimes made out to be.

Loopylil, I am speaking from experience, I'm originally from Manchester!
And in answer to your question, YES! G&T is a definite nono for UC because the T will give you bad heartburn which will aggravate your gut. Almost as bad as redbull and vodka.
If you're partial to mixed drinks your best bet would be rye whiskey and (flat) ginger ale.
You heard it here first.
