what I've read is that they should help re-populate the gut with flora that was destroyed by antibiotic use.
I've been doing a little reading on this lately and finding out more. They should be taken on an empty stomach with no food intake for 30 minutes so your stomach acids don't kill the probiotics.
I also make veggie juice that sometimes has garlic and/or ginger added. The garlic is classified as anti-fungal. Anti-fungals include garlic, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, coconut oil, barberry and goldenseal (there are probably many more). Important to take the probiotic at a time far away from the anti-fungal, otherwise you're probably killing the probiotics.
Is my probiotic working? I have no idea but I feel better so not gonna change the routine for now.

then why does my vsl say to take it with yogurt or applesauce?
so I guess if you never took antibiotics you dont need probiotics?

Probably because probiotics can upset your stomach, but those foods won't weaken their effectiveness.
Good yogurt has probiotics in it, too (but not nearly as much as VSL)
I would still take them, even if you never took antibiotics. There are other things that can disrupt the balance of good/bad bacteria in your gut, probably some we don't even know about
yet. For example, I'm sure I ruined mine with Accutane, which is taken for acne and kills that bacteria (and apparently others). They didn't know it would give people UC, but they do now.

Also it is recommended that Probiotics be taken with things like yoghurt because it is the perfect medium for the bacteria to thrive and populate.
