Abnormal mucosa...what's that???

Now that I'm starting to feel better after getting out of the hospital, I took some time to go over my results from my flex. sigmoid. The doctor said they looked good and the pictures did look good compared to my pictures from other colonoscopies. I looked over what they said and it says descending colon: abnormal mucosa; sigmoid colon: abnormal mucosa; rectum: abnormal mucosa and again descending colon: abnormal mucosa.

What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that even when I'm not flaring that my colon looks different than people without UC? Does this still mean that I'm not flaring? I don't see any ulcers or blood on the pictures, just smooth surfaces.

I have an appt. with my doctor on Wed. and he is going to give me my options and go over everything. I am looking forward to getting on with things. I have lost 8 pounds in less than a week and I'm not even flaring so I'd like to get this figured out.

If we are in remission by all accounts the scopes will look normal but biopsies may reveal a different story. Abnormal mucosa just means that there is evidence of Uc in the mucousal layer of the intestine. It might mean that you are on the edge of a flare but I may be wrong...I hope for your sake that I am.

Thanks Red. I am just coming out of a flare so maybe that's what they were seeing. I sure hope so. I need to stay well so we can figure out what meds I can be on and from what I've seen here all my options have a delay in the time it takes for them to start working. I am tapering pred. and have 4 weeks left to taper.

What else is written in the report....exactly? just abnormal?

Basically, it means it's not perfect, but strange it doesn't say exactly what's abnormal...meaning the structure in what way...etc.

Does it say there's any inflammation? changes from chronic inflammation, etc.

frustrating.

On the last page I found: atrophic and vascular-pattern-decreased mucosa rectum, signoid colon, descending colon and mid-descending colon. This was biopsied for viral culture and histology. Stool samples taken, etc.

Nope, that what is. Just said they would await pathology reports. Hopefully my GI will have more information for me.

Oh....the light is finally appearing to me..lol.

It means you have visible change in the mucosal layer, that it's less than it should be, but obvious doesn't bleed easily (which is a good thing). Because of the mucosal layer not being as it should be, the normal marbling colour isn't there....

The biopsies will explain what's going on in the cellular level.

It would seem your inflammation is probably higher than what was seen in the sig scope.
