I was diagnosed in late January through a sigmoidoscopy and doc told me to start Rowasa nightly. Got a colonoscopy on 2/22 and the Pathology results were as follows:
Ileum: No histologic abnormality
Right colon: No histologic abnormality. Negative for Dysplasia
Left colon: No histologic abnormality. Negative for dysplasia
Rectum: No histologic abnormality. Negative for dysplasia.
My GI told me to continue Rowasa daily for 6 months, after which to go see him and taper off the Rowasa. He said I have very mild UP.
Wanted to get a second opinion. Saw another doctor today (who was named Doctor of the Year by the Gulf Coast Crohns/Colitis Foundation and came highly recommended by several people).
This doctor said that there were two things unusual with my case:
1. Colonoscopy was totally normal - He said taking Rowasa for a month would not cause the colonoscopy to show NO inflammation.
2. I stopped bleeding two days after starting Rowasa. He said that Rowasa does not work that quickly.
He thinks that it was a misdiagnosis and wants me to stop Rowasa and see if I start bleeding (I had no other symptoms, just bleeding for a week before I saw the first GI). If I start bleeding again, then it is probably UP and told me to start Rowasa again. If I don't bleed, he wants me to come see him in 3 months, just to follow up and do another colonoscopy in 6-12 months to make sure there is no inflammation.
I am kinda nervous about stopping Rowasa, since I have been taking it nightly since late January. But of course, I dont wanna take meds for the rest of my life if i don't have UP. Rowasa is the only medicine I am on.
Any comments?
