I've been on Colazal for ten years. It hasn't kept me out of flares but then my UP has been confined to the rectum all that time too. I am slowly coming out of this flare but I believe it is due to the prednisone. Anyway, I am tempted to stop the Colazal for a few days to see if my stools will be more firm. Right now my BM's are sort of erratic. I may skip a day and the next day go five to seven times, less urgency and no blood but soft. Think it is a bad idea? I know my doctor wouldn't go for it but sometimes you have to take these matters into your own hands.

I will say that when I travel for work, I've had occasions where I forgot to bring my colazal and didn't take it for roughly 5-6 days and nothing got worse or better for me...I personally don't think that it does anything for me since I've been on it for so many years. I continute to take it just in case it is actually doing something and I have no side effects from it. Even when I was in the hospital last week, he never had them give me the colazal but had me pick back up when I got out.

I think at first it may have helped me, but in the end it made me worse.

Just my 2 cents,
I think Colazal may help to confine the colitis at rectum area,
but doesn't help the symtom in UP becuase Colazal can not reach there.

I recently switched from Asacol to Colazal and I am not sure if it is helping as much. I notice my stools are less formed since starting Colazal. I would love to try the same experiment but I don't think the result would be positive. I don't know Christine, I would be woried it would make me flare out of control. I guess if you're already experiencing symptoms, it may not be as risky because you may stay the same but I wouldn't stop my meds while my symptoms are under control and risk a flare-up.

I don't want to harp too much, but it might be a good thing to talk to your doctor first before stopping the Colozal cold turkey for your own good because they chart all of that etc.

I chickened out. Didn't take my morning dose but took the three at lunch time. I see my GI next on May 12th, saw him this past Wednesday. His opinion was that the Colazal is at least keeping the inflammation from spreading. I value what he says, so I better not mess with things. When in remission I still take the Colazal and my stools are formed then, so I guess I answered my own question..lol.
