Is a crack of dawn BM inevitable if you used an enema the night before?

Ever since I started on enemas my first bm of the day is very early and usually a bit soft and in a rush to come out. When I was on Humira, I did have morning Bms but not so early in the morning and usually after I left the house.

My thinking was that since the enema puts something in the lower tract when the colon wakes up it feels the need to release whatever is there so out it comes. But not only does the enema come out but the some stool as well.

Is this the case for all of you on enemas? Or are you able to just get up and start your day before having a BM later on?

same with me...as soon as I wake up in the morning it's time to get rid of any remaining enema and yes some stool.

I've had different situations regarding not using one the night before...I think it had to do with the severity of my flare at the time...I was going through a time where as soon as I opened my eyes I virtually had to jump out of the bed for the bathroom...mornings used to be my worst...usually 3-4 BM's within a couple hours of waking. I've noticed since my hospital stay that my mornings have been going very well but that may have to do with the prednisione and remicade now. I get up in the mornings and don't have the need for a BM right away and the urgency isn't there. I'll eventually go in the morning but it's nice and controlled, no rushing for me. But yes, I've had those nights that I didn't use the Rowasa that I would be hopping towards the bathroom almost immediately upon opening my eyes. I used one last night and had so much gas for some reason, couldn't keep it in so I got rid of it after about an hour...it was just too hard to sleep with the combination of the gas pressure and trying to hold in an enema.

Hmm..ok thanks. I havent skipped one since I started but Im curious to see what happens in the morning. Not ready to stop them anytime soon and feeling really well thesedays so I think it will just have to wait for now...
I have been holding them in for 8-10 hours no problem for over a month now.. I wont be on maintenance (2 times a week) till July with the taper schedule the new GI gave me. I dont care though, I am now partial to putting things up my butt if it keeps me well. Fingers crossed that it will contninue to work.

Kweeks- that part of things is totally seperate from anything to do with enemas as far as I am concerned. Just do your thing and worry about the enema AFTER and when you are finally ready to either to go bed or chill on the couch for a bit and watch tv or read. I would not be worried about that at all. Just dont do the enema and expect to have some fun AFTER. Have your fun first, then enema...

OK, thanks Krissy. It's just so unattrative sounding at first, but thats ok with me if I get better. I told my husband about the enemas and said I wanted to try them and he was totally cool about it. He was like, " I've had to put cream up my butt for my hemmies, not a big deal." So he is so awesome about it.

My husband is cool about it too. I do my enema on the couch sometimes after Im sure no bms are on their way and then watch tv with him there. Sometimes I fall asleep there, sometimes not but I am always lying there for at least 45 min to an hour before get up and go to bed. It just becomes a part of your nightly routine..and they work pretty good. What are your symptoms now? I remember us being around the same point and I was VERY suprised to hear on Wed that things were looking clear inside and that I had hit remission.

So you do it on the couch, does it leak? If you did it upstairs do you think you could walk downstairs and then lie on the couch to watch TV or would it leak since you're supposed to stay on your left side for 30 mins?

Well, I am feeling OK, I guess. A lot of my problems are mental I think. You probably can understand that feeling crumby ofr 14 months and having a little one at home can be very frustrating. My symptoms are 1 BM MAYBE 2 a day, the are softish but formed. No blood I can see but you never really know, and cramps before I go and during the day I get upper stomach cramps, like in between my ribs, around my sternum, in the centre of my chest. Sometimes it can radiate to my back. I think gaviscon helps mildly but then it just starts up again.... Its annoying b/c i dont know when i will feel this.

I am going to fly tomorrow with my son alone for a 1 hr flight to toronto but the whole process takes 2-3 hours of alone time before I'll be picked up at the airport by family and I am getting anxious about it b/c I dont want to feel sick and be alone with my baby.

I had my blood tests done and now I still have to book an ultra sound of my upper abdomen. That combined with my cscope and a possible endoscope, we should know whats going on. My doctor thinks its gallstones, but I dont really?... who knows.

How are you feeling during your day? Dont worry about the extra BM's during the day. My husband goes 1-4 times a day and he always has and doesnt habe IBD. That is normal for him :)

Kweeks- the days I do it on the couch no it never has leaked. I am very careful that I dont pull it out and let the meds out at the sam etime. I make sure a good portion of the nozel is in there.
If you want to do it in bed thats fine too, you can still get up and throw it out andthen walk to the couch. I have done this too. I dont think this short interupption will make a big difference. I tink its more how long you hold it in. I have been great this way. I have held it for up to 12 hours some nights. These are mostly the nights I do it on the couch around 830/9 and will not have a bm till the same time the next morning.. it ranges though anywhere between 7-10 hours depending on when I get to bed.
I would say you are fine. But wait fo ryour Cscope to find out for sure. The cramping cold be normal as many normal pple get cramps before bms too..I have been surveying non UCers a lot these days and alot have urgency, cramps, loose stools, etc etc..
I feel better kn owing this. Makes me feel more normal !

I may be late to this... but every morning I have to go when i use the enema.. its like clockwork!! I usually have to lay still for about a 1/2 hour after using it.. but then if i have to get up and do something , i can .....
