Anyone have the surgery while still on prednisone?

     Was wondering if they would operate while I am still on the prednisone or is it too dangerous?  On a slow taper and down to 12.5 mgm.

Yah. I got a lot of infections after being on pred. But then I'm infection-prone.

yes, i was on 25 mg of prednisone at the time of surgery, had quit 6-MP ten days earlier, and quit humira a month prior to it. but 6-MP and humira were still in my system of course.

i think a large percentage of UC/UP and crohn's patients are on prednisone at the time of surgery. there's no way i could've tapered off pred before being operated on, i would've been on my deathbed without it due to blood loss and whatnot.

Yes - infact they had to up it to 40mg a few weeks before just to get to the surgery. Even if you get off it having surgery within 6 -12 months after being on it would require them to put you on it for the surgery anyway.

For example - during surgery 1 they put me on 60mg of pred AND IV hydro cortisone. After surgery #1 - I got off the prednisone over 6 weeks and was completely weaned by surgery #2. During surgery #2 and while in hospital I was again put on IV hydrocortisone and prednisone.

They also put me on IV antibiotics both times to prevent infection.

Now I am off the roids :) :) :)

You are on a smallish dose and you need it. I am sure your surgeon will give you prednisone instructions.

I know this is such a tough time for you, and that you have tried everything. I hope and pray you get the relief I have done from the surgery.

i was on them too. I was on like 20 when i went in then on 15 through iv, then when i came home i was supposed to ween off them the correct way and all but when i got down to about ten and i was having to do it so slowly, i just said forget it and quit. Which was not smart, lol.

But yes, while its best not to be on it, it does happen

I was on prednisone 20mg when i was pregant and had a scheduled csection. They gave me IV steroids during surgery and post op for a few doses and then back to oral. No problems.

I would venture to guess that most UC patients had surgery while still on prednisone since that's about the one drug that can hold a patient until their ready.

I was on 20 mg. The good thing is after surgery you get to taper off them fairly quickly since you don't have to worry about your symptoms returning :) I was off in less than two weeks.
