     I don't look at surgery negatively but I believe my GI doctor does even though he mentioned it to me at my last visit.  He still wanted me to call the GI doctor I saw last September for yet another consult for some input on YET another DRUG....ugh!!!  Enough already!!!

     I told my hubby yesterday I have very good vibes about Dr. Fry and am really looking forward to my visit with him next Tuesday.  Thanks Suebear for all the great information on surgery. tongue

GIs are trained to treat patients with medicine and therefore, holding to what they believe or are taught, they work the medication angle before giving up. My GI had never lost a UC patient to surgery and was befuddled as to why I could not gain remission. He didn't oppose surgery, but he opposed jpouch surgery. However, I sometimes don't think GIs take inconsideration "quality of life issues" as they continue to medicate. I lost so much time living as I tried to medicate my illness. In hindsight I wished I would have had surgery sooner and I had I been provided a surgical consult one year into my everlasting flare, I might have jumped at the opportunity then.

I think suebear makes a good point. Your GI probably thinks he's failed if he can't get you into remission with meds...everyone has an ego, to some degree, and I'm sure he'd feel better about himself if meds get you into remission.

Same with my GI, he keeps pushing meds and tells me Im too young to rid of my colon. Im sure he'd feel differently if he had to take as many meds as I did for the last 7 years.
