What should I expect from this procedure? Will it hurt. Doc (new GI) says that he wants to check out the rectum because "that's where it all starts" I'm tapering from pred (at about
5 mg.) and not feeling any pain or problems really now.

No it doesn't exactly hurt but it feels odd. Over in a matter of minutes so try not to stress out about
it.
I somewhat compare flex-sigs to having a pap smear done. Both feel invasive, but not painful. And over quickly.
I'm sure you're aware, but they will want you to do an enema before. One time pre-cancer a doctor wanted me to do two enemas. Now I know I wouldn't be able to lie still on an exam table. Afraid of what 2 enemas would do to me! They seem to really clean me out now and for hours sometimes.
Good luck!

I've had numerous sigs and Marsky is right. It feels invasive but it's not too bad especially if you aren't heavily flaring. Sometimes the air the doc inserts might hurt a bit afterwards but it doesn't last very long. And also if he takes biopsies, you may bleed for a day or two.

Well, i think they're pretty awful lol. But the last one i received i was apparently so "cleaned out" the dude thought he'd try and go as far up as he could. I guess I almost got a full colonoscopy not sedated so it was not very fun haha

Thank you for your input
They told me I don't have to prep because he just wants to check the rectum.
Any comments on that.
I have no pain right now so that is good.
I guess I'll skip the Canasa that morning.

Wow, then I think just a rectal exam is quite easy to endure. My surgeon does these on me and the scope is very similar to how deep a vaginal scope goes. The scope is just to dilate the area and she has a light she used to see the tissues in this area (mostly they're checking to see if I'm still held together correctly). Doesn't hurt. Now of course I do not struggle with UC so you'd have to ask someone else how painful this scope/exam would be but if the doctor is just looking at the rectum, it's much less invasive than a Flex-sig would be.
However I'm always told to do an enema even for this brief exam. Then again I don't have a reservoir anymore where stool can collect, it's often times barely inside. So if you're insides are intact, then this rectal area would probably be free from stool at the time they examine you.

If he doesn't even want you to prep and is just looking at your rectum, it shouldn't be bad. Not that it is comfy, but it is over quickly, and he obviously isn't looking too far.
For me, the flex sigs are uncomfortable when I am not flaring, but not bad. When I am flaring though, it is absolutely brutal. Again, they are over fast, so that is good!
