Your symptoms are far worse than mine. Today I am having another "good" day. No bowel movement at all, maybe that is why. The days like this I begin to have second thoughts about
the surgery. My bad days I only go 4 - 5 times, but the urgency and pressure is there. First bowel movement is normal and after that become looser and by the 4th or 5th time, mostly liquid. Was wondering if I should have the surgeon do a colonoscopy on me before operating. My rectum is the only place I have a problem. Rest of the colon, with the exception of some diverticulosis, is as clear as a whistle....never had polyps, no sign of UC and no dysplasia. Seems a pity to have it removed. Last colonoscopy was done two years ago but I had a flex sig done in March which showed inflammation in the rectum...big time.

Christine,
If the rectum is the problem why not have it only removed...?

Yea, today I had to force myself to eat. I did feel better afterwards. I didn't think that not eating would cause more gas than not eating.
I'm just dreading the colon prep. My surgeon wants me to go on a liquid diet on Wednesday and then start bowel prep Thursday. Then I have to take Xifaxan Thursday night. I also have to use some kind of "super soap" the night before and morning of the surgery. Fun fun :p
Also, most doctors don't recommend removing sections with UC patients. It is better to have the whole colon removed as we will be "cured" of the disease.

CD...I understand the idea of removing the whole colon with UC...However if you only have Proctitis what has the colon got to do with it. I know Proctitis tends to move uptown...But not always and Christine has had this for 12 years or so w/o it moving. Let me make this clear I am not a DR and do not play one on TV. I am also not telling Christine to not have the surgery. I am just wondering why take out the colon if it is not the problem....

Removing only the rectum would eventually involve a 2nd surgery to remove the ulcerated colon. Standard protocol is to remove both organs. My UC was primarily limited to the last 3cms of my rectum and the whole thing had to go. No big loss as far as I am concerned!

. Now the fun will begin...NOT

xifaxan is some antibiotic that is used to treat travelers diarrhea. I'm guessing that I'm supposed to take that to lower the bacteria in the colon to protect me and the surgeon from getting infected during surgery.
Also the "super soap" is a antiseptic which I'm guess that too is to prevent infections.
