Anal fissure(s) while flaring?

I'm curious, do any of you develop anal fissures during a flare?

I developed one that provided a few weeks of agony before starting to heal, and after a reaction to Colazol that increased my BMs significantly, have developed another. My doc said it's strange (as I've been diagnosed with UC, whole colon) because it's rare to see fissures with UC, and is something more usually associated with Chron's (which he doesn't believe I have). He did say it might have just resulted from the agitation that comes with 20+ BMs/day, but I'd like to know if anyone else, who doesn't have Chron's, has had this happen.

I have abscesses instead of fissures. Doctors scratch their heads and tell me there can't be any connection because I have uc not Crohn's. They have looked at every inch of my small and large intestines and declared "definitely uc!"
As long as they do the surgery and give me the antibiotics, they can scratch their heads all they want. Last September I found an article from John Hopkins Univ. stating that 8% of ucers had fissures, abscesses and fistulas. I am on too many pain killers right now to find the article again but it shouldn't be too hard to find.
Fissures can be extremely painful so I hope you are getting all the help you need. The Crohn's postings have wonderful people with a lot of experience with questions to ask, what to expect, etc.

I have UC and unfortunately I am prone to having fissures. This is probably the 3rd time I have had an issue with fissures, usually they heal on their own with the help of ointment from the doctor. I have one right now & I'm not in a flare...maybe it's a sign that a flare is beginning?  On Monday I am meeting with a colon & rectal surgeon bc I've had this fissure for 2 or so months & it doesn't seem to want to heal on its own.

Let me raise my hand and say, "I have UC and I have a chronic fissure". There is even a scar!

It sometimes turns into a world of agony when I have a flare and lots of diarrhea. So far my GI has been successful in treating it with a course of nitroglycerin ointment (0.2%). He did mention to me that in his mind there is no causal relationship between UC and fissures/hemorrhoids.

I try to be careful staying on top of what works for me with managing flares along with a high fibre diet (especially fruit like oranges and cantaloupe are best for me).

My GI also noted they are reluctant to perform surgery in that area because of all the inflammation I have as well as my general intolerance of antibiotics (causes flares in me).

It will be interesting to see how many other responses like yours and mine there are.

I also have a chronic fissure that was bothering me before I ever was diagnosed with UC.  It heals a little and then comes roaring back whenever I get constipated or go too many times.  It's agonizing to say the least, bleeds all the time and makes my life miserable. So my GI doctor sent me to a surgeon who says they don't like to perform surgery on fissures because too many patients become incontinent.  He gave me a prescription for a compounded ointment with 10% metronidazole. I'm using it now and at first it burned but there seems to be some improvement. All I can do is wait and hope that someday it will heal.

Anal fissures are common territory with IBD during flares, it would be odd to have issues with them while not flaring...often it's the runny D (especially with frequency) that leads to fissures...they vary for each person (some NEVER get them) and for each flare as well, but commonly they are linked to IBD.

I have a fissure, and overzealous wiping is what causes it to open.

Since using the Metamucil caps...it's been good.

I don't seem to have a connection with that and flaring....but have ripped it open during a flare if I'm going often.

Proctocedyl helps mine.
