Enema Question

I had my follow up GI appt after my c scope that was done last month and all clear with the biopsies :) He even told me he went up into the small bowel and everything was good. The rectum is clear, due to suppositoroes that I use everyother night but there is some mild to moderate inflammation for about a foot and a half on the left side. The rest was all clear.

Well, when I told my doc I was having 1-2 BM's a day, mostly formed, sometimes looser, some occational light blood he said- that's GREAT!!!

I dont think this is great, I think I am in a mild flare and I want OUT!!!! He basically didnt give me much hope and made me believe I may never get back to feeling like I used to pre-baby when I was in complete reission, no symptoms. I was upset.

I made him rx salofalk enemas. He would only give me the 2g bottles.

Here's my questions:

Will the enemas help with the cramps I get? They are  a big symptom for me-my worst one.

 

Do you think the enemas will be enough to coat the entire left side (2grams)?

 

In the morning after you use an enema is your BM liquid from the enema coming out?

Hi.  I pretty much agree with what songlady said :)  I've been using the Rowasa and they have def helped.  And yes, I believe if you lay on your left side the meds will reach up into the sigmoid colon.

I hope they push you right on into remission!

LOL at 'colors of the rainbow' stool...first couple days I just didn't know what to think!  No one told me!  And ya, I see some of the rowasa covering the stool but it is not like liquid coming out.

Since I am pretty new w/ the enemas... I can only tell you from my experience so far that my first bm is usually covered w/ white/tan Rowasa liquid. However the liquid doesn't come out. In fact sometimes if I have to get up at night to pee, I was afraid it would gush out but it waits until my first bm and just coats the stool. Not sure about the other questions. Oh, and Elephantpipe is right, they are so darn stingy w/ those enemas. How lame that I had to go in and beg for an enema..you know it is bad when. Good luck!

did the doc give you lots of refills?

As far as helping the cramps...that's usually spasming or gas...but if it's because of flaring, it'll help.


Weird the doc said great with some blood...unless it's a vast improvement from where you were before.

REgarding your biopsies....what do you mean all clear? Meaning precancer/cancer?

Do you have a copy of the results?

yes, it'll cover the area fine....if they don't help enough over time, you might have to graduate to the 4g.

You are upping from supps, so I don't see a problem.

As for retaining them...you will possibly have the urge to expel, but squeeze, pant, claw the sheets...lol...whatever, because it will pass..then lie quietly fon your left side or a half hour.

Don't squeeze the air out...it's a bit difficult to get the hang of squeezing the bottle (shape is different than the Rowasa).

Keep us updated how it goes.

You could consider to double the Critical care for maybe a week...yeah, I know they're expensive.

Oh...forgot to suggest you ask for Bentylol..low dosage of 10mg to start. It's a great antispasmodic and can help with the cramping.
Food choices can help as well...

Some suggest to squeeze the air out of the enema before administering it. It doesn't really work with the Salofalk....just do as the directions suggest.

Do you have the Bentylol already?

I take it when I need....and I take one before bedtime usually. If my gut is noisy or kind of butterfly-like, I take one.

I wouldn't suggest you start with 20mg....start with 10mg. You can double them when at home or at night if your gut is particularly worse. I didn't double till about the 15th year of using the 10mg.

Well, the Bentylol works on a few things...IBS for one, so if that's an ongoing issue, it's easy to get confused and mentally focussed on the discomfort.

Regarding the enemas and peeing...I get up about 3 or 4 times on occasion, depending on how late I've taken my meds....if you push, some of the med will come out, especially if you're flaring or have any gas. I sometimes forget. But, you'll get really good at kegel exercises..lol.
I have let go of 3 in the 21 years while peeing just because it was too difficult to do one without the other.

You'll get the hang of it and whatever tricks you need to use....you've already used the supps...for me, they always leaked when I had to pee...I hate them, lol.

Definitely let me kow how it goes.

Do call the doc and ask for the Bentylol and the lowest dosage. They might make you feel a bit more "relaxed"....just be aware of it...or use it only at night to start.
