purple spots on the toilet... weird

Mine are usually in the bowl not as smuch around the rim. I haven't been getting them lately.

I use canasa now but I am not flaring. I seem to only get the purple marks when I am flaring. When I have formed stools, no purple.

I am so glad to have an explanation! I was actually concerned there was some bacteria in the water supply and was going to call the water company! lol

But what i can't figure out is, why does it turn purple? It doesn't start out that way?

I've commented on this before on another thread I think. I've had this issue for years using Asacol and Mezavant so definately 5-asa. What I have noticed however, is that it is an issue at home in Ontario, but when I visit relatives in the East Coast provinces for several weeks at a time, it does not seem to occure. I've assumed that it is a reaction to certain waters - either hard or soft water or perhaps an added/different chemical in the treatment facility. All are on city water supplies...

It is very very annoying! I hate cleaning the bathroom. I do the wipes every couple days and have recently discovered a 'bleach' pen meant for spot-stain treatment on laundry, that seems to work well to get the set stains to wash away. It kind of foams up so i can apply it to specific spots, let it sit for a moment then wipe it off. Think it may eventually damage the surface of the seat but oh well...

pretty sure it is urine/toilet water splatter to sides of toilet rim and under seat - pretty shocking how much back-splash occurs that most people aren't even aware of!!! It is not immediate... maybe in a few hours, as it dries??? Cause it happens even without BM's taking place.

I once tested to see if I didn't flush if the whole contents would turn purple ... but it didn't...

LOL! Oh, the conversations amongst UC folks.. ha ha!

Chemical reaction. Something with the air. I guess..... ;)

Pharmaceutical companies should be explaining this, in detail!

Actually my suspinsion is that it is only in the urine.

There was a night when I went and peed in the middle of the night and forgot to flush, in the moring, all the water in the toilet looked purplish brown.

I think it gets on the toilet seat from the splashing.

I started Asacol just over a month ago.  Extreme left-sided pain for over 2 yrs, no bleeding, but other UC symptoms. Finally after 3 colonoscopies it showed in the biopsies. The symptoms went away with the Asacol for the most part.  Then came the purple stains.  Thank goodness for this forum.  I could not find info on it anywhere else and I have been an RN for 16 years!  Even my GI doc had never heard of it.  I am 42 and I am one of the few who feels lucky to have colitis... on my 2nd colonoscopy they found a precancerous polyp.  My doc says because of the cell type of the polyp, if I did not have the colitis pain and symptoms which sent me for the colonoscopies I would have had colon cancer by the time I was 50!

I too have noticed these purple speckles and was worried and confused for the longest time. Thanks board.
I take 3 salofalk 500mg x 3/day. Also noticed spots would appear times I didn't have a stool while on the toilet. i.e. just flatulated or urine. Also never haad this problem living in british columbia OR in peterborough ontario. But yes in Toronto and GTA part of ontario.

Anyway just wanted to share my experience and good to find the answer.

Man, I am still trying to get the traces of mesalamine off my bathroom tile :-( I just had my whole apartment repainted and as part of the renovation, I got a new toilet seat and have sworn off mesalamine enemas. rolleyes
