Flagyl/Cipro cured my UC... UPDATE! DAY 1

Yesterday evening I decided to take matters into my owns hands since my Primary doctor and GI brushed this issue off of Flagly and Cipro cured my UC.

I got my hands on Flagyl (500mg) and Cipro (500mg). Don't ask me how I got them.

My normal day is 16 + bowel movements with 15 of them bloody. Severe pain, bloating, and non stop gas.

Yesterday evening 7pm, I took Flagyl and Cipro 1 pill each. Today in the morning I took the same dose, 1 of each.

And it's 9pm now, I just took another dose of each (1 pill each)

My results... ?

No more blood.
Intestinal gas and bloating has been eliminated.
Pain has subsided 75%
No formed stools as of yet.




Am i going crazy or what?

My GI and primary doctor keep insisting I take Prednisone with Sulfasalazine after I told them what happened with Flagyl and Cipro.

Prednisone and Sulfasalazine don't even show 1% IMPROVEMENT!

What would you guys do if you were in my situation... please...

ANY feedback whether positive or negative will be appreciated.

I want to try a course of flagyl but my doctor doesn't think it would be helpful. I know how frustrating it is when you know something is not right and no one listens. I hope you can get to the bottom of this. Please keep us updated.

CURED????? I thought the only cure for UC was surgery???? Bold statement!

Easy there big guy!  I'm just saying that as far as I've heard the only "cure" for UC is surgery.  I don't think I need to be a doctor to relay this info.  I'm happy for you if the cipro and flagyl gets you into remission, but "cured" I don't think so.  Not my opinion, just medical fact.....

I guess the "other" method wasn't working for you.....

If the cipro/flagyl is working, then there's something else going on such as infection?

Have you had stool samples done lately?

GIs use flagyl for UC to re balance the gut flora. We were told about 10% of UC patients respond to it. Our GI was very keen for our daughter to try it. When on the abx you should of course be taking good quality probiotics.
Is there any chance you might have crohn's? The two drugs you are using are often used in conjunction to treat CD.
I'm a little surprised your GI(s) are so against using flagyl. I'd look for a new doc if I were you.

I took 3 weeks of flagyl lately and it helped while I was taking it, but am now deeper in the D hole than ever after finishing the course of flagyl.

Flagyl helped place me into remission too. I was on Flagyl for 3 weeks but I have been taking probiotics since then and remained in remission. My explanation is that I killed off the bad gut flora and have implanted good flora before the bad guys can take over again. Only a guess but it seems to work so far. Probiotics only remain in your system for a few days so I will continue to take them daily for as long as I want to remain in remission.

Probiotics seem to work better for me when taken with psyllium seed powder. Certain foods can still seem to start problems for me again so I avoid those items.

I think Flagyl can "cure" you if you are misdiagnosed. I do think a lot of people get lumped into this UC category when maybe they have some kind of bacterial imbalance. I know prior to developing UC I did deal with BV and took Flagyl which fixed my bacterial issues. I am not convinced things were ever truly fixed. I would really love to try a course of Flagyl but no one will prescribe it to me. I wish I could just go get some in mexico. Maybe I will.

    I would totally agree, but it would be a "cure" for something other  than  UC.

I've been pretty much in remission since Sept, except for abdominal pain; lower left. Which would make sense since I have Proctosigmoiditis. The pain was enough to require Percoset several times per week. A few weeks ago I went on a week long course of Cipro for a Urinary Tract Infection, and amazingly the pain went away! Haven't had to take a Percoset since. Coincidence?

I really think UC is a bacterial imbalance issue. I have NO GAS on flagyl and cipro, NONE! pain has subsided about 85%. i just have loose bowels and i saw a little blood earlier today. Bowel movements have subsided about 70%.

I remember the first time i took flagly and cipro was when it worked the best. 3rd day, ALL symptoms gone, formed stools.

Now, i still see improvement on 3rd day, but not as good as before

You really need a different doctor wallc777. My doctor did LOTS of tests to make SURE I didn't have some kind of infection before and during my Prednisone treatment. So I really think you might have something! Maybe not, it could just be an imbalance like you you say. Are you taking Probiotics? Be sure to replace those bad buggies with some good ones! :o)

Totally agree...UC isn't bacterial, but you could have something else going on....

I agree with quincy and whoever else said it... prolly something else happening.
I've taken antibiotics and they didn't help. Probiotics don't seem to either. But I might try them again when I get home. Right now I just eat Activia.

Here's a case where c. diff. exacerbates colitis and cipro/ flagyl/ vancomycin treatment improves both.  The underlying ailment is UC, but it's triggered by c. diff.  The study goes on to suggest that c. diff. is difficult to permanently eradicate, but vancomycin puts the patient into prolonged remission.

You'll definitely need a new doctor, and stool samples wouldn't hurt.  Vancomycin ain't cheap, either.

I agree with seconder. I think this flare I'm having was kicked off by a virus. Like a trigger but I had UC before that virus. So I think they can go hand in hand and sometimes to get a flare under control you also have to get that infection under control. So it could be one or the other or both!

EP, I don't think probiotics help my UC either but I have found they do quite a bit to control gas for me. So, as with other dietary things I think of probiotics as a comfort thing - help symptoms etc. :o)

Old thread but if OP still around what was the end result?

Not a doctor but I've had some relief with probiotics administered orally and rectally. Also eliminate foods with roundup poison and pesticides.
