Do any of you ever worry about anal cancer?  By having UC, are you chances increased or decreased?  Any thoughts?  I am currently prepping for my colonoscopy tmrw.  The prep this time is so much easier.  Basically, it is just 4 pills and drink 64 oz. of gatorade with laxative.

I don't think our risk is any different.
But early detection might be improved, since we get that area checked out more often than most.

Good luck with the prep! A suggestion, mix your prep with one than one flavor of gatorade. 64 oz of one flavor can get really sickening. I like to use Propel grape.

With UC or even crohn's colitis (CD affecting the colon) there is a higher risk of colon cancer, especially with a long time active disease at and past the 10 yr mark...I have not read risks of anal cancer being higher for IBDers though...if anything it would likely be higher for a crohn's patient (like myself) than a UCer since UC is limited to the colon/rectom and doesn't involve the anus, whereas CE can affeact any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus.

For the past two years my rectum was chronically inflamed. I was prednisone dependent. I had a total colectomy and permanent ileostomy 19 days ago. My paternal grandmother died from cancer of the rectum and around the same age I am now...63. Suffering with UC for twelve years and running the gamut of meds I believe this was the best choice for me. It wasn't easy and I have a long road to recovery, but I won't have the worry of developing cancer of the colon/rectum and am looking forward to having my life back instead of running to the pot, bleeding and urgency.

Anal cancer is more rare than colon cancer or rectal cancer. Anal cancer is what Farrah Fawcett died from. I believe had she opted for surgery when her diagnosis was discovered, she would still be alive today.

I'm not worried about cancer of any kind since my gut/colon is HIGHLY analyzed and watched. I eat healthily and exercise.
