Hi doses of Glutamine anyone? I take a product called Glutagenics everyday which has a small amount of Glutamine in it . An alternative med person I spoke with recommends the following which is a combination of fish oil and a very high dose of Glutamine.
I had a MSA (Meredian Stress Assesment ) test dont which told me that Salmon Oil is not good for my body - weakens it but the Cod Liver Oil would be ok for me. I've tried high doses of salmon oil with no difference in flares - blood thinning may have made things worse. Here's an excerpt from his email re: Glutamine.
1. High dose of fish oils (Nordic Naturals and NutraSea tend to be the best unless you can get Metagenics or Genestra brand). The dose would be anywhere from 10g to 30g a day in as many divided doses during a day as possible. 1tsp of liquid = 5g and 1 gel capsule = 1g. Stay with 10-30g per day for a month to two months and then drop down to 5-10g a day. Just make sure you're not allergic to shellfish or anything in fish oils!
2. The second thing is to be taking 80g of L-Glutamine a day in divided doses. For example you can add 20-40g in your VitalGreens drink in the morning and then a few other 20g servings throughout the day. Apparently most protocols of 5g of glutamine a day just don't make a difference. Keep with the 80g per day for about
3 weeks (21 days) and then drop down to about
10-20g a day.

80g of L-Glutamine! I've just started taking it and I'm doing the 5g (well slightly more since I use a heaping scoop) a day to start. My first thought was, 80g per day would mean I'd be buying a container every week and that stuff is expensive.... if it made a big difference healthwise I guess it'd be okay but I don't know. I've read 30g as a max dosage in most places, although I have seen one as high as 40g. I also remember reading that it is tough to "OD" on it, but still use common sense. Eighty grams sounds like a lot.
I think I pay $15 for 1lb (100 servings)

Levi, where do you buy yours? I pay a heck of a lot more than that.

I forgot to mention (becuase I order a few different supplements at the time so it didn't cross my mind) that there is a $5 shipping charge per purchase. If you order a couple of items it's not bad, but didn't think you might order just one l-glutamine in which case you'd pay 20 bucks.
Hopefully it's still a better solution for you.

I took a look at the website and it's $5 to ship within the US. To ship to Canada is more, though I didn't discover how much more. I'll likely look around for a Canadian site. ________________________ Female, 44, Vancouver BC DX: UC (Pancolitis) as of Jan2009. Symptoms first began June2008. Currently in remission. Really high doses of l-glutamine could be constipating.

Haha, yes. I eat lots of fresh veg, quinoa, fish, yogurt, brown rice, salads. I really do eat very nicely. I haven't take the GLutamine all week because I ran out. On Tuesday I was so sick with this flare I couldn't get out of bed or off the couch. I was SO tired! Bleeding and running to the bathroom after passing gas. I'm up and around now. The Salofalk has taken care of the bleeding but the inflammation is still there. The little bit of stool I have passed is very narrow, stringy almost.
I hear your concern about
the Glutamine. Once I get past this flare I 'll know more. It just seems odd that my symptoms are only D if I'm really sick and unmedicated, otherwise i'm constipated if I'm flaring. In the time between I have proper, fully formed, elimination happening. I just started taking Glutamine today after a week off it.

Just wanted to post on my results as well...I started take 2 heaping teaspoons of L-glutamine powder (roughly 9-10g worth) with juice 30 min before breakfast and dinner last Thursday. I saw some results after day 3 (Sunday) and by today (Tuesday) things are much more pronounced. Like Levi, I didn't have diarrhea to begin with - but rather more "loose" stools since my initial flare last year. My theory was that because of the flare, my colon just was not absorbing water like it used to. Thus far, I am really happy with the results.
One thing I did notice is that I do have some white component in some of my stool. It is not mucus, but rather just stool with some white pieces in it instead of normal brown stool (almost like I drank a little barium prep). I am pretty sure it is the L-glutamine powder as I have more or less eaten the same thing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the last 5 days (yes it did get boring!) to really see if the L-glutamine would help and didn't notice it before starting the powder.
Also wanted to mention that my dad, who doesn't have UC or any stomach issues, after reading some of the benefits wanted to try some and poor fellow got constipation after taking half my dose in just 2-3 days. All in all though, I am going to continue taking the L-glutamine as a supplement! Not sure about
my dad! :) Thanks to those who brought it up!

I was taking 80 grams and backed down to probably 20 but went into a killer flare anyway. I'll load up again and see if its speeds my recovery I have underway.
