Hi,

Here's my situation: I've been in a moderate flare for several months (too long). I was prescribed prednisone by my GI, but I've put off taking it because I do not tolerate it well. My question is: Will Imuran get rid of a flare? I currently take the maximum does of Lialda. It controls my symptoms, but I've got to get rid of this flare. I have an appt. with my GI next week. I want to go on Imuran regardless of whether or not I have to take prednisone, which I will do if it's the only thing to cure the flare. Thanks.

Hi mags, and welcome to the forum!

I have not yet been on Imuran, but my understanding is that it takes several months to kick in, and that if someone is flaring, they are often put on prednisone to take care of the flare at the moment and then as they taper off the pred, the Imuran should begin to kick in.

Hopefully somebody with first-hand knowledge will chime in.

How long have you had UC, and is it in part of your colon or throughout? Also, I'm curious about your enthusiasm to go on Imuran.... would you say more about that....?

When I was first diagnosed, I was on Humira and Imuran. I was on both of them for 1.5 years, and while taking them I went into remission within the first 6 months. Once you start the Imuran you will have to go in for blood draws monthly or something like that.

I currently take Imuran. I was put on it at the same time as pred, for a flare that did not want to go away. I'm not sure how long it would have taken to work by itself but I started feeling better in a few weeks. I have heard anything from about six weeks to several months for it to kick in.

I'm a lot like you, my and pred don't mix well and the lialda wasn't doing anything spectacular by itself.

Just make sure you go in for your blood testing when you get the script.

Imuran got rid of my flare. It took about 1-2 months and it did a good job.  I haven't really any thing bad to say about the Imuran. My blood work has been great.  I was even able to lower my dosage from 200 to 150 mg with no change. 

It doesn't work for some people but for those that is does work for it works very well.

I've been on Imuran for almost 2 years. When I started, it was because I couldn't stop a flare (tiny one) and the Lialda wasn't calming it down. I began Imuran and felt better after a month.

That was fast, as it usually takes 3-6 months or so.

My doc tried imuran for me since all the 5-asa's dont seem to make any improvement. It gave me a lot of nausia and pain so had to stop it after a week. Now getting remicade so hopefully that will kick this flare with the Pred on. I dont like pred but I dont like flaring either...
