We have very high deductibles now - individual $2500.00, office copays $60, Rx copays $30-50.
Our insurance will cover the cost of a colonoscopy if nothing is found. My husband had his 2 years ago but since they found a polyp (benign), it applied towards our deductible.
For my last colonoscopy (clean by the way, nothing, nada found), because I am a colon cancer survivor, they don't cover the cost. This bill applied towards our deductible.
So yes this is becoming more the norm now. When I had cancer, 11 years ago, we had great insurance. Every pre-cancer and post-cancer test was covered, we only owed $800 for a 7 day hospital stay, $600 for a 5 day stay (ostomy reversal). I shudder to think what we'd owe today if one of us had to be hospitalized. Our bill would be in the thousands. I know it.
My husband is self employed and just recently told me how much he pays for this coverage - family of 3 - $16,400 per year.
And people wonder why some of us do want health care reform. Employers cannot afford to provide premiums with coverage they once did. My husband said his premiums have gone up over 6 times in 11 years. To the people who can't understand our frustration, I can only guess that these people must have insurance and low deductibles/co-pays like I did 11 years ago.
Sigh......
