Colazal or Balsalazide Disodium is the generic. I take 5 in the am and 4 in the pm and 1 folic acid at pm. This alone has worked wonders for me :) Dont know who all has tried it but it is worth trying especially since it has a generic.

I'm glad that this med is working for you. I too noticed a difference when I switched from Asacol to Colazal about 6 years ago. I was also glad to see it went generic. Unfortunately, I need additional meds to keep me flare free :(

Colazal is keeping me in remission, in my opinion. I was on Asacol for two years of my remission and then switched to colazal and I feel much better since switching.

This is good news to hear. I've been on Asacol for the past 12 years but doc just swichted me to Colazal. I start on Monday and have been nervous about making the switch.

UC since 98 I thought Colazal was NOT for people with pancolitis. Colazal targets the left side, I thought.

I switched 9/23/10. Very happy with it. $30 copay instead of $125. Works better so far than asacol and just as well as sulfasalazine for me.

I got some heartburn at first and the pharmacist told me to take it with food. That stopped the heartburn and I found some study in the UK that indicated it should be taken with food because it reduces systemic absorption.

Only complaint:I can normally swallow handfuls of pills without water but these gell caps stick in my throat. Taking a mouthful of food then liquid helps. You can also open the pills and mix into applesauce.

I think it got a bad rap because it was poorly advertised,is off labeled for maintenance and you have to take a lot of pills.

I noticed you said you are taking folic acid. I was told to take that with sulfasalazine. I didn't know that you should with colazal. Did the doctor tell you to take it? Not sure if I should or not.

Anybody take a lower dose like 3 or 4.5 grams a day? My current doctor didn't know much about colazal and just gave me full dose of 9 pills a day. Told me to do what I wanted. In Europe they start at 3 grams/day and work up to 6 for remission. From what I can tell 9 pills colazal is about equal to 6 pills asacol. I think that means 3 grams of colazal is only 1.2 grams asacol? Doesn't seem like much

I'm really intrigued.... I'm tempted to ask to try it! I'm a little scared to give up Asacol after being on it so long, but....I think Asacol is helping some, but not as much as I might hope. Hmmmm.....

Journey2health, you may have been right about Colozal.  I have been having all kinds of problems. Doc put me on Apriso today so we'll see if that helps.

I tried Colazal when I began flaring while taking Asacol. It didn't seem to help keep my symptoms at bay. I also tried LIalda but eventually went back to Asacol. I may try Lialda or Apriso in the future if I ever stabalize 100%.

is that a sulfa based product? I can't do sulfas...

Colazal is not a sulfa drug. I have reactions to sulfa and none to colazal
