in 2008-2009 i was in a clinical trial to test entocort for uc patients. previously is has been used for only crohns pts.
i had a colonoscopy before and after entocort
12/08 (before) my scope showed: colitis in 15cm if rectum, recto sigmoid colon, ascending colon
2/09 (after) the trial my scope showed inflammation still in the rectum, with inflammation in the ascending. the sigmoid looked clear.
i was not told if i was on the entocort or a placebo, but i think i was on the entocort, i started having gas and stomach pains while taking it
i had to pair the entocourt with asacol, a drug i had taken for years. No rectal meds during this time.
if it was entocourt (and i think it was) then it looks as if some of my colon was cleared while using it. it did nothing for my rectum.
in fact, i firmly believe that to address inflammation in the rectum, rectal meds are a must- oral meds just do not address that area during a flare.
I am just about in remission- i think its from the increased lialda, nightly rowasa, primodophilus rheuteri (sp?) probiotic, and fiber(metamucil capsules), and some changes in diet.
hth!
