My GI is retiring :(

I was afraid this would happen due to my GI's age. He is retiring. sad He was very careful in doing colonoscopies, he sees his patients right away if they are flaring, and he spends time with his patients. There are many doctors like this nowadays. Oh well. I guess I better look for someone new. Any recommendations for a GI in Silicon Valley California?

That's my worst fear since I've had him since day one almost 22 years ago.

HOpe you find one through recommendations. Did yours not suggest another GI?

Gads, that has to be difficult. Dr. Mehadevan gets rave reviews however she is at UCSF.

No. He recommended finding a GI through our PCP. I'd like to find one who is receptive to his/her patients, open to treating this disease with diet, probiotics, ... , and is careful at performing colonoscopies and surgery (if one day needed). I'm willing to travel anywhere within the state of California if needed.

Doctors are very useful for filling out prescriptions and ordering tests. But I decide what tests to be included, like vitamin D level, and what meds are necessary such as deciding whether to go on pred. The doctor will not decide for me what level of risk I should take with meds without my first researching their pros and cons.

After being on this forum for a while I would weigh what Subdued had to say more than what a doctor tells me. But I would agree with you that for someone inexperienced with UC a doctor who is open-minded is a great asset. And if a time comes when I need surgery then I would not care how open-minded the doctor is, his surgical experience and competence will be all that matters.

My first year being diagnosed, I had a Doctor that was close to retiring. When I had my last sig, I wished he was doing it because he did a better job, the sigs he did I didn't feel a thing, but with my last one it really hurt. Hope you can find a good GI this time around.

When we moved I found all our new doctors through ratemds.com
We have been VERY pleased and all are younger than me so shouldn't be retiring for years :-)
My GI is as good as I've had and has a great nurse who calls back immediately after talking to the doctor relaying my question/need/rx request.

Try it out. Of course you'll need to see if they are in your insurance plan too.

I love my doctor and he's older, too. I will be a wreck when he retires!

*Jen* from Silicon Valley switched to Uma Mahadevan at UCal-SF and was very pleased with the attention she got there. You can probably look up her old posts on the forum. UM is especially interested in women's issues. Good luck-- it's not easy having to change doctors if one bonded to the previous MD. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
