Need a straight answer- does MESALAMINE deplete FOLIC ACID

I cant seem to find the right answer..some sites say yes..some say no..some say only Sulfa, some say mesalamine is a sulfa like drug so it does deplete folic acid..

has anyone been told this by their GI?

If you take sulfasalazine, your doctor should also give you an Rx for folic acid tablets-- because the sulfa component interferes with absorption of dietary folic acid by the body. Other types of mesalamine meds have not been reported to cause this interaction. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

so...all you'd have to do is supplement, or make sure you eat foods with folic acid, correct?

It's easy to get checked at this point I would think.

Wow..this has also confused me!  My GI prescribed folic acid along with the mesalamine too.  My med records stated it's a "trial".  Not really sure if it needed, but would love to NOT take it as it stains the toliet seats purple!

 

Oh how embarrasing when you go visit people overnight!  I have to ask them to have some clorox wipes near the toilet so I can wipe the underside of the seat!

P&H, actually, I think it's the asacol that stains the toilet seat purple (is that what you meant, or did you mean the folic acid?) Been there, done that...
