Ugh-rant/vent

I just need to vent and you guys are the best!
So I'm in my 4th year of college and I'm applying to get in the medical lab science internship portion of my degree. We do 3 (or 4 in my case) years of on campus classes and then a year at a hospital for an 'on the job' internship that we get credits for. Well I applied to the hospital of my dreams, which was the only school I applied to because I wasn't quite qualified for the others. Two weeks ago I got an email from the program director saying that my science GPA was below the 2.70 needed and they wouldn't be offering me an interview. I was so bummed. I'm sure veterans like Red and Quincy remember my little mental meltdown two years ago when I decided to transfer schools because I was so full of anxiety that I was busting at the seams and I was really unhappy with the school/grades. I transferred schools because I KNEW that the grades I was getting were not the grades I could get. Now I have a 3.54 overall GPA and a 3.34 science GPA. I had assumed that that would be what the program director would base my grades off but instead they took all the bad grades I had at my previous school (plus the two courses I had to retake there) and combined them with my current grades and came out with a very different result, ultimately disqualifying me. It's like I go through all of that and I work to better grades and prove my intelligence and it still comes back to burn me in the arse.
Now I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do. My advisor and I were working on trying to get into Mayo but the lady was backtracking on something she had told my advisor so that option was out. I have one last hope. I don't have the exact classes needed for the program but my advisor is talking with the program director to see if they would over look it. So far I haven't heard anything back from her and its just killing me! If that falls through I will have to take a year off of school and work because I'll have to start paying back my loans as I won't be taking credits.
This has all been doing a number on my colon. I haven't had a normal bowel movement in almost 3 weeks. I'm almost positive its IBS from all the stress but it sucks none the less!

Can you ask your dream hospital what you can do to re-apply? Ask how you can improve your credentials, what would it take.
IOW don't take your turndown as the final answer. I would do this yourself rather than through a middleman, and call rather than email which is very impersonal, although emailing in advance that you will be calling to ask is good so the person involved will not feel imposed upon.

You could even state in your email what you did to improve your grades and that this hospital is the only one you applied to because it is the only one you want to be at.

I managed to get into a Master's program 30 years ago that I was unqualified (on paper) for. I drove there (3 hours) and walked on campus, found the building and knocked on the door of a professor and told him I wanted to study there. People to people contact makes things happen even if it's just a phone call. People respond to sincerity and will help you if it is possible for them to do so, even giving you tips for how to get what you want.

Good luck. Life sometimes turns out better than you can imagine (yeah even with UC). If things were easy everyone would be a millionaire.

I'm sorry to hear this Sam :( I know you have been working your tail off to do better. Life has a way of doing that to you...turning around and biting back. I sure hope things work out but please try not to stress over it. I know, easier said then done. While you are waiting to hear back from them, do something nice for yourself to take your mind off things. Hang in there!

@gardener: I would have contested the email but there were over 50 applicants when the normal is 10-12 so it wouldn't have done much good anyways. I guess I now need to make sure the program director understands why those grades are what they are.
@bookworm: Med lab scientists do blood testing, urinalysis, immunological tests, etc. What med lab scientists find is 70-80% of the information doctors need to know to make a diagnosis. We have to do our internships at a hospital that is affiliated with our school. Right now there are only 3 so that makes it difficult. I would actually register for classes at my own school, pay their tuition and attend classes at the hospital.
@SoIgotIBD: Yes, I've been in remission 4, almost 5 years. I don't feel the way I did while I was flaring. I always had this "heavy" feeling while I was flaring with a lot of urgency and pain. Right now its like I feel I have to poop, I go and its D with minimal pain which makes me think it's IBS.
I know it will all work out but the thought of taking a year off scares me. I feel like I lose momentum if I do. I just want to be done and move on with my life. Everyone says the real world sucks, but so does 6 years of being an undergrad!
Retail therapy has helped a lot but I'm a broke college student so I have to be careful!

That is tough Sam. Everyone else is right though, if you keep working hard this will just be a bump in the road. It's amazing how much things can change in just a few years.

(bear with the following analogy :)) What I'm about to say reminds me of Owen Wilson talking about Liv Tyler growing up and changing in the movie Armageddon. After giving the advice, Bruce Willis says [Owen], you are only like thirty seconds older than her!

What I'm trying to say is I'm only five years older than you but some of the heart ache I went through at my job and wondering if I had even chosen the right field at age 22 and 23 was horendus. Now, I couldn't be happier. I've learned a lot in those years. I've never been a fan of saying "things happen for a reason," but the things that do happen are very rarley as awful as we think they are with our "present time tunnel vision."

My fianceee did not make it through dental hygiene school and I was beginning to think she would NEVER get over that blow to her self esteem. It was AWFUL. This was three years ago, and she finally got a big promotion at her bank a couple of weeks ago. She is very happy.

Just keep working hard and things will play out. Probably in a way you really didn't expect them too exactly, and that's not a bad thing.

Thanks everyone! It's nice to hear kind words from others beside those close to me. It puts it in perspective more I guess. I'm so thankful I am medicated right now! If I wasn't I would truly be a complete disaster!
Old hat that's exactly what it was. My grades made me easier to weed out and she didn't want to deal with more than she needed to so she screwed me over.
The whole reason my school hired my advisor was to rebuild the program and start working on more affiliations with hospitals so students don't run into the problem I'm having now.
Still no word from her. I'm trying not to get my hopes up because they can be dashed so easily. Every time I hear an email notification I thinking "Oh my god, is it my advisor?!?! Is it good news....bad news?!? Ugh it's torture!
