What would you ask Dr. OZ about Ulcerative Colitis?

 I am thinking of writing D. Oz , I would be curious to hear what he thought of what happen with Hailey.  What would you ask Dr. OZ about Ulcerative Colitis? 

First I have to tell you that I love your show, and you are such an wonderful person, and you make a difference to peoples lifes everday. I am writing to you to ask your opinion about something that happened with my daughter and her health. I wrote a letter about what she went through dealing with the awful disease Ulcerative Colitis. I have watched support forums for years about this disease. I have talked with people that have been put on very strong medications that alter the immune system and they still have symptoms of UC.

 After seeing what happened with my daughter and watching her health improve so drasticly in such a short amount of time. I feel I need to get her story out to others that are dealing with Ulcerative Colitis. Here is a letter I typed up about the journey that we took with my daughter and her colitis

Since I wrote that letter in 2006, Hailey's colitis has not returned. She is still diagnosed with Selective Igm defiency and has gotten pneumonia every year. Last year she got a cold and it turned into pneumonia within two days. She also developed C-dif after a treatment that was given for the pneumonia. She responed well to Flagyl. Her immunoligist would like us to start IVIG infusions on her to boost her antibodies .

I've heard of Dr Oz but I've never seen his show and don't know what type of Dr he is. I would guess that you guys know more about UC/IBD than he does. But, he might find your story interesting. I'd love to see some top GIs explain what they think happened in your case (I'm sure they'd say it "wasn't IBD"). It seems that whenever someone responds to a non standard treatment (ie diet etc) they never had the disease in the first place!

killcolitis, he's not a GI; I'm pretty sure a heart surgeon. I've only watched his show a time or two, and personally wasn't too impressed.

haileys letter, please don't take this the wrong way, but since you asked, I probably wouldn't ask Dr. Oz anything about UC. He's not a GI, nor is he an immunologist, or any sort of doc that I would think would know much about UC. I *do* think that his show could bring some much-needed attention to IBD, and how it can affect people, but I don't think you'd get any good answers about Hailey's health from him, if that's what you're looking for.

I agree with fruitgirl....Dr. Oz seems to look at everything very superficially. The guy is great for getting ideas like exercising and not smoking to the masses but I am sure you know much more about UC than he does.

Your story is amazing. What ever became of the research by the student that your immunologist was going to have study Hailey's story? Does this immunologist keep in touch with you?

 I understand and I do agree .

 Just thinking about Haileys health. She is home with the flu, but it is the normal flu.  I was just remembering  the dark days, and thinking of everyone that stills suffers with Uc.

 Yes we still go to the immunoligist , and since Hailey has been better he has been able to  "discover" nine more components of the immune system. 

He was very happy the last time we saw him He told us that he has broken the Toll-like receptors of the immune system down  into nine more components, which in turn he has developed new testing for many of the children that have immune disorders. Actually Hailey was one of the first  patients that was able to have her blood tested to see how the new nine components of her immune system were working. This is all new and he just finished "discovery" it within the last six months.

   So, I am happy that he has been able to do that.  I have so much respect for him , his intelligence is pneumonal! I wish I understood all of the toll-like receptors. The good news is that the blood work that she had done to check the other components of her immune system was good. So, I am happy about that.

I would contact him in the hopes that it would offer hope to soooo many that are suffering from this disease. There are things that I have learned from others that I would never ever have thought of doing. Things our G.I. should have told us since this is his field. Dr. Oz is a cardiologist not a GI but I've seen him tackle all sorts of issues on his show. He also takes a somewhat natural approach to things. He's not against alternative means of helping yourself like so many doctors are.

If you get Hailey's story to reach the massess you have no idea how many people could be helped.

I think it's honorable that you want to share your daughter's story. You can also contact the show "The Doctors". It airs on CBS I believe.

re the flu, did you know that vitamin D has been shown to be more effective than flu shots in preventing flu? do a google on it...

Totally agree on vitamin D. I raised my levels to 54ng/ml and felt much better. Also, check out Oz's program from yesterday about UC:

I learned that when Dr. Oz spoke of his colon cancer scare and his fear with having to live with an ostomy for the rest of his life, that he is completely clueless about surgical cures for cancer. The fact that he didn't even know that the jpouch surgery is a viable option for colon cancer patients blew me away. He's a doctor, right? He should stick to talking about cardiology, his specialty, and leave the rest to guest specialists.

I am with you Sue. The guy is very charismatic ( in the eyes of some) and that is his draw....not his medical knowledge.

He is the Jim Kramer of Medical TV. He knows basics about a lot but just scratches the surface.

At least he brings awareness to issues.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but Toll-like receptors have been known for almost two decades though only extensively characterized in the last ten years or so. Maybe the testing was for abnormal function of TLRs?

I think you should write to Dr. OZ. I like him because he seems to considers natural remedies rather than prescriptions given by GI doctors that only control your symtoms and never really heal. Plus, I think he knows alot more than most GIs even if he is mainly a heart doctor. I'm so much more impressed with him than all these doctors who are just "perscription happy"!

  I know Toll-like receptors have been around for almost two decades.  They have only  discovered 11 of them. He has broken it down into 9 more.
