Hi, I'm Mohamed, I'm 24 and have UC for two years.
My Dr. told me that I got osteoporosis as a side effect of high dosage of prednisone I took on last July "60mg".... Now I'm taking 5mg.

My question is, how length does it take to treat osteoporosis.... The Density of the spine is %56, %59 for the Hip and %88 for the Hand

-Prednison 5mg
-Pentasa 4g
-Fulic Acid
-Calcuim 2000mg
-Vit. D 2000iu
-Ossopan800 twice daily
-Protelos

Hi Mohamed. Welcome to healing well.

Did you get a bone density scan to determine you have osteoporosis? I got it too from prednisone in the hips. I take Fosamax because it is cheapest. I believe Protelos you must take once a day. It might be more effective than Fosamax which must be taken once a week. I'm not sure. You need to take a bone builder and I believe that's what you are taking. I take 1200 mg. of calcium a day. How many mg. do you take?

I know the work of bone builders is very small. Fosamax after a year builds about 5 percent.

For convenience sake, you might want to take Fosamax or Actonel, both need to be taken once a week. Or Boniva, once a month, but I was denied that by insurance because it is so expensive.

Hey, Thanks for your welcome and replying me :)....

I'm going to do the scan this week.
I'm taking calcium 2000mg daily with 2000IU Vit D3.... Also Ossopan800 twice a day....

The doctor prescribed me Actonel at first but when I checked its side effects I found they are horrible, so i replaced it with the Protelos, it's powder and taken once daily before sleeping.

     I have osteoporosis from prednisone also.  My bone scan read -3.5.  My doctor said that was pretty bad.  I fell in 04 and suffered a compressed fracture of the lumbar spine.  I refuse to take Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva or any of that stuff.  I take 1200 mgm of Calcium with vitamin D.  I only have the osteoporosis in the spine, not in the hip which the doctor found to be odd.  Had total colectomy with end ileostomy on June 28th.  Off the prednisone completely by mid July and feel GREAT!!!!  Hope I never have to take that poison again.

     Journey...I know a woman who works for a dentist and he won't do dental work on a person who takes Fosamax, Boniva or Actonel unless they go off it for two months.  Also, did you hear on tv that people have suffered pelvic fractures on those meds and there are lawsuits pending.? I won't touch that stuff.  I really don't think it builds up your bones, if it does, it is doing harm to something else.  My GI doctor never pushed it because he said it could cause ulcerations in the esophagus..forget that.

about the bone builders of the group bisphosphonates like actonel have bad side effects and what I'm really concerned about is the jaw osteoporosis which definite with actonel....

I'm still waiting to hear from my Doctor in regards to my osteopenia to see about treatment. He was going to contact a rheumatologist. He had mentioned Boniva or Reclast

I'm sorry for you....

about the bone builder you'll use like Boniva, My opinion is to look further about the side effects of these group of bisphosphonates....
