weaning off hycort

finally all better (i think) after 3 months of flare - now weaning off hycort - any suggestions - stayed on it nightly for a week after all clear, then went to every other night. still on salofalk qid

Hi..welcome!

You shoud have stayed on the hycort for at least another week or so.

Why did the doc not put you on the salofalk enemas initially? or were you on them and then switched to the hycort?

How many salofalk oral?

How far up is your UC..limited or throughout?

Basically, you're tapering the hycort too quickly..what did the doc say to do?

thanks for the reply quincy. dx about 2 1/2 years ago with proctitis, then 6 months later pancolitis. switched from salofalk to hycort after 2nd flare. my specialist was not too specific about weaning off and referred me back to my gp for f/u - gp really could not suggest info re weaning off so i have asked for a referal to a GI... i take 1000mg qid of salofalk year round. guess i'll go back to nightly hycort for a couple of weeks, then go q 2nd night for 2 weeks? rather do that than risk early flare return.

How long were you on the Salofalk enemas before switching?

I'm impressed your GP at least put you on rectals...

What exactly are your symptoms at this time? and what were they before you started the hycort?

It would be safe for a few weeks and if all is good, go to every second night. It would depend on what your symptoms were and what they are at that point.

You'll find out soon enough if you've tapered too quickly.

I've done lots of tapers in my first 2 years after diagnosis, and it ends up to be true that the butt rules and will let you know when you're ready to taper and if you're tapering too fast. There's no set rule except to use them as soon as symptoms show.

But the symptoms mean what? is the key....that's the learning and the teacher for future treatment and maintenance.

You should try to get back to the Salofalk enemas if you can, however...and save the steroid ones for a kick if needed.
