So, when I was on here last, I was posting about my upcoming prep/colonoscopy...Was still struggling a bit with some D, some cramping, just general blah.

So, the biopsies come back and they are all normal. more than normal, the GI says I had acute infectious colitis and not UC. No meds, no nothin.

So, now is it IBS? is it some fallout from some nasty gut virus? I was in the hosp for 5 days with bloody D, severe cramping, severe dehydration, etc etc in August and thats when the UC diagnosis came...

I just dont know what to think.

I think it's wonderful news! Did your original biopsies show infectious colitis? seems weird for you to have a diagnosis of UC and then you go back and they say it was infectious colitis all along.

It is great!

When I was in the hosp, they were hoping for infectious, but said it was UC. I had a sig done while I was there and the biopsies they took said UC.

So weird now that it shows nothing.

And when I received the results, it was so eh. They just said "no UC, no IBD, totally normal. stop all the meds" Also said maybe food borne, like salmonella.

I guess they were wrong about the UC.

Hi...UC diagnosis can be difficult, but if you're going off the meds, you'll find out soon enough if there's anything to the UC aspect.

When you were originally in the hospital, did you have bleeding too?

Do you have copies of the biopsies done in the hospital and from your recent c-scope?

Did you have stool samples done in the hospital as well?

What meds are you on and for how long?

I had started having horrible watery D on a sunday, went to the Dr on Monday (she said it was some nasty food bug) started Antibiotic 1, continued to get worse, went to ER on Wed, he changed to Antibiotic 2, re-hydrated. Continued to get worse, Went back to ER on Saturday with really bad bloody D, almost all blood, severely dehydrated, cramping, nausea..He called infectious disease and GI. GI took over, admitted me. Had sig, biopsies said UC.

I dont have the copies, i should ask for them.

I did have some stool samples, they were testing for C-Diff. Im not sure what else.

I was on 4800mg of Asacol, 5-10mg Prednisone. I had been on them since the end of August. Altho, since Ive been off, its been an adjustment. I still am going 6-7 times a day. When I have to go somewhere for a long time, I dont eat and take immodium.

Maybe it was just a nasty virus.

Hopefully, it was just a virus....scary, nonetheless.

I suggest you get copies of the biopsies as well as the stool samples. again, just because you'll know what was tested.

How much of your colon was affected? you didn't have a c-scope until lately, right?

Again, get copies of the latest c-scope. Look up all the lingo so that you're aware.

You now have conflicting diagnosis...

I strongly suggest you get on realllly good probiotics and take fibre supplements. Not eating isn't a good thing (but I couldn't do it, so that's truly a subjective statement).

How are you doing at this point in time?

That is pretty crazy! If you got biopsies that said UC and now they are saying it is not UC, it makes me think that any of us who have had biopsies that say UC could eventually, somehow, with the right treatment, could get biopsies that say we don't have UC. This is what scares me so much about surgery. What if you have surgery and you never had UC in the first place? That would be a lot to go through.

How long were you dealing with the "UC"? I've been dealing with it for years. My GI said bacterial situations wouldn't stick around for all this time. I don't see how something bacterial would clear up on its own...

Biopsies don't usually state UC....but may state consistent with UC. Some only say colitis.
It's kind of a disease that's last on the list after others have been eliminated.

Bacterial can clear up on its own...depending on what it is I think. But UC can be an ending result of that...most of us will never find the initial trigger.

Regarding surgery...yeah, that can truly be a sticky point for many, but suffering is usually what makes the decision. If I never got relief, UC or not, I'd go for the surgery.

Quincy, you are right. they stated that the way it looked under the microscope was consistent with UC.

Its only been since August, and the sig I had in the hospital said everything that they saw was super inflamed.

Im not sure what the initial was. maybe it was the turkey burger...

Im doing pretty good. I still deal with lots of BM's, nausea, and some general blah feeling. Might be time to go back to the regular Dr and figure some stuff out.

How can one get infected by the intestinal bacteria? Will cooking the food generally kill the parasites?

Asacol and Prednisone.

Speaking of Asacol, I had to order my meds 3 months at a time; I got the call from the doc and then the next day I received 3 months worth of Asacol. Not opened, still in the packaging...What to do with them?

I think if the food wasnt cooked hot enough it wont kill the bacteria

Parasites and bacteria...two different situations...depends as well what bacteria or parasites for some can survive cooking and others can't.

We suggest probiotics for the purposes of undercooked foods and all the bacteria ladened poop that seems to be everywhere and is easy to pick up hand to mouth.

hmvpdx..too bad the doc didn't put you on rectal meds.

Were you tapered off the pred?

How much asacol were you on? and to just stop cold turkey?

I think Asacol can be donated...or maybe your pharmacy will make a return....Put out a separate question on here and someone will hopefully answer.

What probiotic do you suggest? I want to try anything to stay healthy.

I use what's in my signature...but many use VSL #3 and culturelle.

Quincy, why is UC the last on the list of disease that they have to rule out. I suffered so much and for so long because they kept checking if it was other things.

Because UC is autoimmune, not anything specific with a biopsy that says ah, UC. There are many other things that mimic it. STDs, Microscopic colitis, herpes, fungal, becterial....etc. Fecal testing is definitely a good thing.

As well, one can have UC happening at the same time...good to have overall testing, if all is clear with everything else, and some blood tests connect, it's probably UC or CD. That's where the line gets blurred when CD mimics UC...
