I've never heard of 'not taking probiotics whilst on azathioprine'. I've been on it for the past four years and taken all kinds of probiotics with no (known) side effects.
The only caveats I can give re aza is that in (my own case), although it put me into 'remission' for about
a year, it gradually lost it's efficacy. My GI however, refuses to take me off of it lest I have another major flare like the first one that put me in the hospital for five days.
The other big concern is the skin cancer risk. Again, (in my own case) I contracted BSC (basal cell carcinoma) in three areas (face, back and chest) that required surgical removal. Bear in mind that I'm fair skinned and have been very careless over my many years in (lack of) sun protection. I have a load of solar damage and would have probably been a prime candidate for some form of skin cancer given my stupidity and fondness (trying) to get a bronze tan.
If I wasn't allergic to the 5asa's I would have sooner be on them as a so-called maintenance drug. You will have to get bloodwork done every three months so the GI can monitor if it's harming you (mainly your liver), it's no big deal otherwise.
