It does sound like mucus but usually it's accompied by less than formed stools. I would try rectal meds before jumping to prednisone but that's just me. It depends how you feel of course, if you're in a lot of pain and having tons of frequency and urgency, I can understand wanting to feel better asap. You should get in touch with your GI and ask for an opinion on how to proceed.

you're flaring and things are pretty fragile if you're bleeding too.
how long on the imuran?
have you never used rectal meds yet? if not..maybe call and request to try some. If you cannot take any 5ASA (mesalamine), then opt for the steroid enemas.

on imuran for about
13 months, never talked to GI about
rectal meds, they sound painful? I am also anemic and on 600 mg iron /day. B12 is fine. Had a dizzy spell at work and sort of collapsed as if all my energy left me. lasted about
one minute.

They are not painful at all. They are very effective and easier to use than you would imagine. Have you ever been on Asacol or similar?
I've heard iron tablets are not so good to use when your UC is flaring up. Anemia can cause dizziness and low blood pressure. Do you get frequent bloodwork? Maybe you need iron infusions.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

I am a bit anemic, and have always had low blood pressure. yesterday, before starting the pred,I went for blood work as usual every 8-10 wks. Just got home today, and there were 5 missed calls from the lab on my phone. Not once did they leave a message. I'm not too sure what to think of this. Up until about
2 years ago I was very healthy, now since being diagnosed with UC I fell like I'm falling apart

I'm glad I read this one. I thought I was looking at pieces of my asacol.

Sounds like mucus to me... and I've had it on well-formed stools a lot. Great the stools are well-formed - that's good news!
But clearly something in there is fragile, as Q said. I tend to bleed easily... I can be having a very mild flare - maybe 2 well-formed stools a day and then start to see blood.
If I were you I'd ask for Rowasa retention enemas - they put the medication right on the inflammation, and it's a lot gentler medication than prednisone! (There are folks who are allergic, but for most of us, Rowasa is a wonderful thing.)
As one wise forum member once said, "if my foot were on fire, I could pour water on my head and wait until it cooled my foot, or I could pour the water directly on my foot." That's the thinking behind the rectal meds.

I had this a month ago same thing mucus but well formed stool and blood with slight right side pain.. My Gi told me I had IBS ontop on the colitis. I went 8 weeks before i was put in hospital as it turned out i had an abscess in my bowel.. If you start to get a temp. I would go straight to the hospital to be checked.

Please don't go on pred unless things are really going south.
