Enema question…

Tomorrow I’m having a sigmoidoscopy. My GI said that I need to get three fleet enemas for the preparation. I got these enemas and they have saline solution in them…It seems that it is not a very good idea to put this solution onto ulcerative colitis affected tissue. Wouldn’t it make it more irritated?? I don’t know, but it seems not very smart to distress my colon even more…So I’m thinking what if I substitute the saline solution with boiled water? Would this be as effective or would I have to use more water to reach the same results? Any advice is welcome…

Use what you're given....it's flushed with saline anyway during the scope.

I would just use the fleets. I've used them when I was flared up to prep and it didn't seem to harm anything.

The saline will be at 'normal' concentration - meaning that it is balanced to the salt level of the cells in your body. If you use plain water it would irritate the surface more. It is a bit like putting plain water in sensitive easily damaged areas like the eye.
