Thanks for all the responses folks. It is really great to hear all the experiences and thoughts. Helps me a great deal in getting a better perspective on things. I guess the one question I am trying not to ask myself is that even with Remicade, am I just delaying the inevitable surgery?? My GI did mention for the first time last month that I may want to think of that option since that eliminates the risk of colon cancer down the road. So if I am eventually going to go that route anyways, why not think of it while I am still young? As Blueheron said, it's better to make that decision while the symptoms are not severe and it's not an emergency situation. My UC symptoms are completely gone right now with 40mg pred. I was out the whole day yesterday in San Francisco, had a nice dinner in on the way back with the girlfriend. A perfect day. 2 BMs in the morning, one in the afternoon and one before I went to bed. On Sat, ONE solid BM in the whole day.... Can't really ask for anything better. And then the thought of surgery, or even any more medication sounds crazy. But really, it feels at times that now is the right time to think about it and make a sound decision..
As fantastic as it is that you're doing well, feeling much better while on a high-dose of prednisone certainly doesn't mean you're free and clear. You need to take advantage of the time you have to make some decisions. In my personal opinion, Remicade is a option worth serious consideration. It may very well be the drug that delivers a serious and LONG-TERM remission of symptoms. It's also not the last option on the list. In the hypothetical, but certainly not unrealistic scenario that you respond well to Remicade and become asymptomatic, you may yield years and years of remission. Let's say after that period of time you cease responding to Remicade positively to Remicade and again experience a recurrence of symptoms - there are other EFFECTIVE options available (to say nothing of medications and treatments that may arrive in the future) such as Humira.
I think it is difficult (and impossible) to know whether or not a colectomy is an inevitability for you. There is no way to know if it is in your destiny. Do you not think it's worth trying other medications towards achieving a meaningful remission and avoiding surgery as a final solution? Of course it is up to you, but I would imagine that trying the most effective and safest drug we currently have on our list of treatment options (Remicade), is worth a try.
I am glad you are currently feeling better and wish the best for you.
