Prednisone Questions

First of all let me say how thankful  I am to find this support page It is great to know that there are others like you fighting this terrible disease and they are brave enough to fight the daily hassles of the disease.

My UC  flared up in the last three weeks. It started with standard diarhoea, got stomch cramping and finally the full blow flare now. I have received prednisone for treatment now. So, when I take it aroud 6 am things are great, I can function normally but then prednisone starts wearing of around 4-5 pm and then the bowl return with blood returns and the pain returns.

Is there anything I can do control the outburst?

good questions ellen. I was wondering the same thing.

I think it is very odd for the GI to give you prednisone without trying some of the other available medications first. I was in a massive flare up and I was able to get into a year+ remission with Asacol and Canasa suppositories. I would have been mad if they put me on prednsone before trying other meds. prednisone may help ease your symptoms but it's hard to taper off of it without symptoms returning, especially if you're not on other drugs. Did your GI mention starting other drugs?

That makes more sense. Often with a hefty dose of prednisone you won't need other drugs. I just find it odd he didn't try Asacol before prednisone. Did he say why? Were your symptoms severe? Mine were when I started Asacol and it helped and I avoided prednisone. By severe, I mean I was going 20x a day with blood, D, pressure, pain and I was anemic from blood loss. Some people need more than prednsione to get out of a flare. If you're not doing better in a few days, I would recommend calling your GI and seeing if you can get on some other meds like Rowasa or Asacol. Rowasa is an enema that helps control inflammation in the rectum.
